The United States and Israel have launched a joint military campaign against Iran, employing a historic level of bilateral cooperation. While each nation has its own codename for the ongoing operatoin, Operation Epic Fury by the U.S. and Roaring Lion by Israel, their unified effort began with the aim of dismantling Iran’s nuclear program, destroying its ballistic missile and drone capabilities, eliminating its navy, and decapitating its leadership. The ongoing operation follows months of bilateral planning coordinated between U.S. Central Command and the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), which also included daily coordination their respective leaders, ie CENTCOM chief Adm. Brad Cooper and IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir.
The two militaries have divided the operation into geographical zones in which the Israeli Air Force (IAF) has focused its efforts on western and central Iran, targeting missile launchers and command centers from which long-range attacks on Israel originate. Simultaneously the U.S. military has concentrated its missions in southern Iran, where shorter-ranged missiles have been targeting US bases around the Gulf. The result of this coordinated effort has enabled both forces to suppress Iranian retaliatory capabilities while reducing the overlap between operations being conducted by the two militaries.
Additionally, the division of labor between US and Israeli forces has provided the ability fore each military to maximize the benefits in respective choice of target types being pursued by the two armed forces based on their respective capabilities. Hence, the U.S. has taken responsibility for sinking Iran’s entire naval fleet and conducting deep-strike missions using its fleet of B-2 and B-1 bombers, Tomahawk cruise missiles, and carrier-based aircraft. Meanwhile, Israel has focused on high-value regime targets in Tehran, which includes leadership command compounds, internal security facilities, and ballistic missile command base of operations. Israeli strikes resulted in the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, along with several top IRGC commanders, and key figures in Iran’s intelligence and defense hierarchy.
A critical factor behind the continued intensity of the ongoing campaign has been the support of the US aerial refueling capabilities. This includes dozens of American KC-135 and KC-46 tankers which have been deployed to Israel and have helped compensate for the limited size of Israel’s fleet of refueling planes. This has in turn led to the ongoing sustained long-range operations and hundreds of strikes being conducted in a single day. “Joint coordination cells” present in both countries have also led to the synchronize coordination of intelligence,
The combined strikes have established local air superiority over western Iran and Tehran, allowing both nations to conduct further precision strikes under significantly reduced risk of mishaps. Despite early successes of the joint US-Israeli campaign, Iran has responded with intense missile and drone attacks of their own, killing nine Israelis and six U.S. service members, while also damaging infrastructure across the region of the Middle East.
