England Descends into Dhimmitude

Recently, a precocious, curious, intelligent young boy in Israel asked why is it that in the United Nations Security Council, among the five permanent members—unlike the other ten states that rotate in and out in two-year terms—the United Kingdom is there among huge powers like China, the United States and Russia, when it is such a little country.

Obviously, the boy had yet to learn of the four centuries during which the English created and ruled over arguably the greatest empire in history, over which “the sun never set.”

He had yet to learn that the fertile, if numerically small, English people midwifed the birth of the United States of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Iraq, Jordan, Belize, and Israel.

This tiny people’s language also became the global norm in diplomacy (displacing French), and the universal medium in science and medicine. In international aviation, pilots and control towers communicate only in English.

Britannia led world culture from the 16th century, the age of Queen Elizabeth, Francis Drake, and Shakespeare, into the 20th century. In London in 1967, there was nostalgia among the chattering classes in response to the withdrawal that year of British rule from Aden, as the last of the Empire’s possessions “east of Suez.” This was the decade of Swinging London in the Soaring Sixties, with British rock music groups entertaining the world.

But today, sadly, the London that once ruled the world is dying. The English comic actor John Cleese famously said in 2011 that the London he once knew is no more, and he misses it. One piece of evidence for that view was King Charles’ recently knighting Mayor of London Sadiq Khan. Under Khan’s aegis, Transport for London recently banned all flags on taxis, ostensibly for safety’s sake, but most British believe it was done because taxi drivers were waving Union Jacks, which London’s leftist and Muslim bureaucrats see as the English working class giving the middle finger to Muslims.

Further evidence of decay in England was a video in May of a minor public demonstration in London by a crowd of Muslims cursing Israel that was opposed on the other side of the street by one man shouting “G-d bless Israel!” until two policemen materialized and arrested him—presumably with the best intentions, fearful for his safety for challenging Believers in the One True Faith, now becoming the dominant religious community in England.

Most recently, on June 20, the Gur synagogue in Stamford Hill, North London, was broken into and vandalized. Torah scrolls were torn to pieces, the doors of the Ark ripped off and smashed, holy texts pulled from shelves and thrown on the floor, and the sanctuary damaged. This is timeless behavior by people unhinged by a kind of human rabies whose symptoms include a violent hatred of Jews perceived as the evilest people in the world.

It is historically and symbolically significant that King Charles, the official head of the Church of England, kowtowed not only to Sadiq Khan but also to his community, whose religion calls for the destruction of all other religions in the world, including the Church of England, whose nominal head is the King.

The curtain on the final act in English history seems to be rising now. Who is more famous in early English history than King Richard I, the Lionheart, who fought the Muslims in the Holy Land, not in order to convert them (as the uneducated misunderstand the Crusades) but to end their oppression and cruelty of Christians there? Compare that to today’s king, who knights a Muslim who does not identify with the Union Jack and presides over London’s transformation toward Third World standards, including the mayor’s refusal to defend the Jews living in fear, with many of them fleeing the city.

In France in recent years, an estimated 70,000 Jews have been forced from their homes because Muslims moved into their neighborhoods and embittered their lives. A simple walk to the local epicerie could be accompanied by insults and threats, and now London’s Jews in their neighborhoods are fearful too as never before.

The English have been invaded by an alien, hostile, religious society, and they themselves no longer have a religion of their own to resist the invasion. As elsewhere in Western Europe, on Sundays in England, the churches are empty.

That King Charles bestowed knighthood on a man who does not identify with the flag of the English people is a symptom of a metastasizing dhimmitude, a chronic condition of self-abnegation and kowtowing to a culture whose name, Islam, means Submission.

This is what Jewish historian Bat Ye’or means by dhimmitude, a word she invented. From earliest Islam, Muslims licensed themselves to approach an infidel, demand that he convert, and if he did not, he deserved to be slain on the spot—with exceptions. These excepts were infidels to be “protected” from this fate—dhimma means protection, and it extended to some monotheistic Jews and Christians, and later Hindus, Buddhists, and Zoroastrians (using a tortured logic to label the latter three monotheistic too.)

One reason the Muslims instituted these exceptions was that these protected infidels were obviously to their own illiterate people as a polity’s skilled workers, merchants, engineers, and physicians. For example, in 1679, in Yemen, Al-Mahdi Ahmad drove the entire Jewish population into the Mawza Desert to die, but in the end, after many did die, he brought them back when it became apparent that they were indispensable to his rule.

Likewise, in historic Algiers in this period, the Jews ran the mint, for the illiterate Muslim tribesmen in the country knew nothing of metallurgy.

Dhimmitude means knowing one’s inferior and subjugated place in a Muslim-dominated society, which was on display in that London rally where a Muslim crowd likely led the police to deprive a man of his right to free speech for his own safety. When Muslims completely take over, there will be no more speeches at Hyde Park’s famed “speaker’s corner.”

In today’s London, the mayor is faithful to the Koranic command that he “oppress and humiliate” the Jews, which he does passively by neglecting to protect them from the abuse that is currently driving many of them to flee the city. John Cleese was right that London today is not what it once was, when Jews with skullcaps could go about their business in peace and not in fear for their lives.

Islam means submission, and like Nazism and communism, it is a totalitarian mindset fuelled by a demonic hostility to Jews. What is happening to England should be a lesson to every nation that cherishes liberal democracy—so many of them the product of the once-magnificent British Empire.

The U.S. and Canada are now likewise being settled by Muslims with the same goal as those in the UK and Western Europe. In New York City, a Muslim is now the Democratic candidate for mayor. If elected, his political ascent could signal the start of the Big Apple’s descent into dhimmitude, too. He has threatened to arrest Israel’s prime minister if he dares set foot in New York when he is mayor.

In post-War Germany, promoting Nazism became illegal. In Russia, after the Soviet Union collapsed, communism too was outlawed. And so, every liberal democracy needs a similar law against promoting Islam, another ideology propelled by an insane hatred of Jews.
