Dr. David Wurmser provides an assessment of recent developments surrounding the latest proposed Gaza agreement, broader regional diplomacy, and the strategic balance in the Middle East.
As explained by Rabbi Pesach Wolicki, Wurmser agrees that the emerging proposal for the implementation of the Trump 20-point Gaza plan is very different from its original sequencing by making Israeli withdrawal simultaneous with, rather than after, Hamas’s complete disarmament. He notes that this would leave Hamas’s military infrastructure and influence largely intact through a technocratic government which would remain closely tied to Hamas. He further maintains that the proposal does not ensure Gaza’s demilitarization, which he also notes is Israel’s primary strategic objective.
Wurmser also addresses issues relating to how Turkey, Qatar, and, to a lesser extent, Egypt are shaping postwar diplomacy in ways that undermine Israel’s security and sovereignty. Wurmser explains that Turkey is replacing Iran as Israel’s principal long-term strategic challenge by expanding its regional influence across Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria, while criticizing a recurring pattern in which Israel is made to fulfills agreed upon commitments while its adversaries are held to no such standard.
The interview also examines Saudi Arabia’s reported efforts to organize a coalition against the Houthis, which was compromised by previous decisions made by the Saudis which are now contributing to the worsening of the current situation. Finally, he discusses U.S. policy toward Iran, suggesting Washington remains focused on preventing a wider war, keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, and limiting Iran’s nuclear program rather than pursuing regime change and victory. He concludes by asserting that Israel may ultimately need to act more independently to protect its long-term strategic interests.
