I was raised in a conservative Jewish household, married a Jewish woman, raised three Jewish girls, and now have five Jewish grandchildren. During a four-decade career in medicine, our family was active in the large Jewish community of Cleveland, which was (and remains) very pro-Israel. Yet during this period, if you had given me a quiz on the history of Israel or the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (IPC), I would have flunked. I was busy seeing patients, writing books on medical topics, teaching. It was only after retirement and three trips to Israel that I became knowledgeable about this history, and began to take note of the range of Jewish opinions about the long-standing IPC.

Peloni:  Many interesting revelations/speculations in this discussion.

Peloni:  Qatar is and always has been an abject enemy of Israel.  They fund Hamas, protect their leadership, and promote terrorism around the globe.  But they also fund specifically anti-Western and anti-American themes as well, not the least of which include the antisemitic prospects on US colleges and the antisemitic protests which the Trump administration is trying to shut down.  It would be best if the US acknowledged these facts as real and acted upon them as Israel has done, rather than shielding Qatar from the consequences of its anti-Western.

There is still confusion about the ultimate result of Israel’s strike in Doha, which struck a meeting of Hamas leaders. Israeli government sources have said they are “not optimistic” about having decapitated the terror chiefs. Qatar and the allies it pays for are moaning about Israel’s “war crime.” Two things to note:

• Even if Hamas leaders survived, they are now aware that there is no safe haven. The rules have changed.
• If you didn’t wail about France’s strike in Mali that killed 16 people at a wedding, or the US strikes against Osama bin Laden and Qassem Soleimani, don’t start now. It is not a violation of international law to strike terrorists hiding in third countries – the third countries assumed the risk; Qatar rather publicly.

The New York Times has wasted no time in an article that struck at the heart of America’s relationship with Israel, suggesting that America risks alienating Gulf “powers” over Israel’s actions. Qatar hosts the largest American military base in the Middle East, has bought billions of dollars worth of defense systems from the United States and recently gifted a luxury Boeing jet to President Trump.

Peloni:  It is hard to forget the day when the policy of abandonment and betrayal known as the Disengagement was set in place in 2005, when Jews would force Jewish lands of Gaza to be made Judenrein.  It was like losing sight in one eye, or having the stability afforded by two legs ripped out from below, but in truth, the loss which penetrated the Jewish psyche that day was so much more pervasive, perfidious, and painful, because it was intended that this legacy of loss and betrayal would be cast down thru the ages in perpetuity, an ever present betrayal to be handed down from generation to generation.  Today, some twenty years after that betrayal began, we stand at a point of perhaps repairing what was broken, of making Gaza Jewish again, of breaking the sense of legitimacy which makes Jews pariahs in their own lands, of ending the policy of Judenrein territory with Jewish compliance in the Jewish state.  Is this the path which will be followed in the days of the Day After policy, or will the Day After simply be a new rehearsal of the abandonment and betrayal which began in August 2005…

First of all, there’s no doubt Israel informed President Trump before the operation. With major U.S. military bases in Qatar, there’s simply no way Israel would have carried out a strike there without coordinating with the Trump administration.

Did the U.S. then inform Qatar? And if so, did Qatar tip off the Hamas leadership living in luxury in Doha? We don’t know. And frankly, we may never know.

But the fact that we even have to ask those questions should tell you everything about the dangerous double game Qatar plays in the region.

The Lebanese cabinet heard, on Friday, a presentation from Army Chief Rodolphe Haykal on a confidential plan to monopolize arms, as tasked by the government on August 5. The cabinet then issued a statement, and Information Minister Paul Morcos held a press conference. The vague responses left observers divided, with each side interpreting the outcome differently. Some saw progress toward disarming Hezbollah, while others accused the government of stalling in collusion with the pro-Iran militia. Supporters of Hezbollah and its ally, Amal, were left uncertain about whether to support or oppose the decision. This ambiguity has fueled confusion: Will Lebanon disarm Hezbollah, or not?

One of the nightmares that periodically jolt me awake is the image of an American jumping from the inferno-ravaged upper stories of New York’s World Trade Center into the dust-plumed streets below.  He is tormented and maybe praying and then gone.  More than anything else, that horror from 9/11 haunts me.

 Thomas L. Friedman, foreign affairs columnist for the New York Times, claimed in a recent article that Israel’s actions in Gaza are “making it a pariah state.”

Like the shepherd boy in Aesop’s fable, Friedman has been crying wolf—warning that Israel will become “isolated in the world”—for 36 years now. Yet it still hasn’t come true.

Earlier this year, Friedman predicted that President Trump’s Jewish grandchildren “will be the first generation of Jewish children who will grow up in a world where the Jewish state is a pariah state.” A few weeks later, Friedman updated that soundbite, telling the “GZero” podcast that he fears his own grandchildren will grow up in his imaginary Israel-as-a-pariah world.
