After series of Israeli airstrikes in southwestern Syria, observer group reports explosions targeting Hezbollah positions in northern Syria.

Explosions were reported in northern Syria Friday morning, hours after airstrikes attributed to Israel rocked southwestern Syria, near the Israeli border.

The latest explosions were again attributed to Israeli warplanes, which reportedly struck Hezbollah targets on the road between the city of Homs and Palmyra.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitored the explosions, the explosions were the result of Israeli missile strikes on weapons depots at a Hezbollah base, called the “Hassan bin Al-Haytham” camp – a former school now used by Hezbollah terrorists as a regional headquarters. Saeb Erekat, Secretary-General of the PLO Executive Committee, on Thursday praised what he described as the “courageous and responsible” report of the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Fatou Bensouda, who ruled that “Palestine” is a state and the ICC has jurisdiction involving its cases.

Erekat said in a statement that Bensouda had asked the preparatory committee to determine that the area of ??jurisdiction of the ICC includes the “West Bank” and eastern Jerusalem as well as the Gaza Strip.

“The arrival of Palestine at this stage sends a message of hope to our (Palestinian) people that the date is coming on which a criminal investigation will be launched against those in Israel who have committed war crimes against the Palestinian people,” Erekat said.

On November 16, 1980, prime minister Menachem Begin was asked during an interview with NBC how he thought the international community would respond to an Israeli annexation of the Golan Heights. At the time, a bill extending Israeli law to the disputed area had been introduced on the Knesset floor, but Begin’s government had not yet announced its support for the move.

“As we didn’t yet take any decision about it, I think it is premature to speak about reactions,” he told the interviewer.

About a year later, Begin pushed the Golan Heights Law through the Knesset. The international community’s response was unsurprising, with the United Nations Security Council condemning Israel’s de facto annexation as a “continuing threat to international peace and security.” Resolution 497 passed unanimously, including a “yes” vote by the Reagan administration. Even those who think they despise it must today envision its rebirth; throughout these days of lockdown and death, we have witnessed manifestations of strong, positive national identity in Italy and in many other countries in Europe. And of course, in Israel.

Italians and Israelis cannot help but feel a sense of great pride and emotion as their respective nations react, fight and survive both the pandemic and the selfish, bureaucratic international institutions. It has been moving to see Italians singing their traditional popular songs from their terraces, balconies and windows to boost morale, reminding us of how beautiful it can be to be Italian; it is touching to see the red, green and white flag hanging from windows.

Together, Italians anticipate Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte or President Sergio Matterella’s next speech. Not because they love them particularly, but because they find courage in the flag that hangs behind them, in being Italian, in finding again a strong historical, aesthetic, familial and even religious identity.
