Armed guards, panic buttons and fear: The new reality for Jewish worship in America
Peloni: The preference for American justice to bend towards political outcomes rather than apply the law equitably places an impossible burden upon the Jewish community. How can you possibly harden a minority community from harm in a nation in which harm to that community is not actually universally judged to be illegal. The restoration of equality before the law was what made life for Jews different from what was experienced across Europe and the rest of the world. It was this fulfillment of religious liberty which granted Jews their Golden Age in America, and the attempt to pretend that barricading the community behind guards metal detectors and security cameras is a poor substitute for the fulfillment of recognized freedom of religious expression. America has changed in great and terrible ways, and until that change is reversed, the best security measures money can buy will only ignore the fact that America is becoming more like Europe at an alarming and devastating pace…and of course, the full purpose of that change is first being weaponized against the Jews as the canary in the coal mine. If America is to survive, it must return to its cherished practice of exercised liberty and justice which made it the safehaven for Jews, but for Christians as well. No amount of money can possibly substitute for such a gold standard as this.

Just days after another wave of antisemitic threats and increasing security fears at Jewish places of worship across America, religious leaders descended on Capitol Hill this month with a blunt message for lawmakers: houses of worship are under siege and many congregations simply cannot afford to protect themselves alone. They need help…and financial assistance.
Rabbis, pastors, Muslim leaders and other religious and security officials spent the past week urging the U.S. Congress to significantly expand federal funding for synagogue, church and mosque protection. The vehicle for doing so is the Nonprofit Security Grant Program.
