Russia and Turkey agreed to a diplomatic solution for Syria’s northern Idlib province at a meeting in Sochi on Sept. 17. It followed weeks of concern that Syria’s regime, backed by its Russian and Iranian allies, would assault the last rebel stronghold in Syria, an area home to several million civilians as well as a coterie of Syrian rebel and extremist groups.
The Russia-Turkey deal may provide a lesson for U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. It shows that a country’s goals can be achieved, and conflict avoided, as long as military force is a clear option and a country stands by its allies. In this case, Russia and Turkey both were committed to their allies and refused to see them defeated or lose face in a potential battle.

The World Bank says that the “economy” of the Gaza Strip is collapsing.
This is or should be about as shocking as the discovery that there is gambling at Rick’s café. The word “economy,” which implies at least some productivity, barely fits. Gaza has survived on UNRWA stipends that have supported 1.3 million people with Palestinian refugee status (out of a total population of 1.8 million), on payments from the Palestinian Authority (PA) to its tens of thousands of “employees” (who either do nothing or work for Hamas), and on other donations from Europe, the US, and the Arab world.

Thursday’s Ford-Kavanaugh hearing posed severe potential pitfalls and minefields for the GOP.
If Christine Blasey Ford were to be cross-examined too fiercely, especially if serially by eleven mostly older Republican men, the stakes would be far more perilous than losing a Supreme Court nominee on the precipice of confirmation. More dangerously, such a debacle could drive independent White women voters who have backed Republicans and who are enjoying a robust Trump economy, to remain home six weeks from now on Election Day or, worse, to vote Democrat.
However, if Dr. Ford were not to be challenged effectively, that also would imperil Republicans, as the GOP, nevertheless, would be standing by a damaged SCOTUS nominee under a dark cloud.

Palestinian president: Nation-state law nullifies two-state solution ? ‘U.S. disqualified as sole mediator of peace process’
NEW YORK – Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday that there would be no peace without a “an independent Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital, and not some place in East Jerusalem as its capital, and with all of its holy sites.”
Opening his speech by stating “Jerusalem is not for sale, and the rights of the Palestinian people are not up for bargaining,” the Palestinian president said that Israel’s “racist” nation-state law nullifies the two-state solution, adding that it will lead to a single “racist, apartheid state.” He said that Israel’s “colonial occupation continues to suffocate us.”

The Labour leader appears neither to know nor care about the history of Jerusalem

In the main Labour Party conference hall in Liverpool on Wednesday there were more Palestinian flags being waved than at a Hamas rally in Gaza, or at the opening session of the Palestinian Parliament at Ramallah.
The vote by party members to debate Palestine was the fourth most popular after housing, schools, and justice for the Windrush generation. The subject of “Palestine” gained more votes (188,000) than Brexit and the National Health Service.

PA leader appears poised to cut the $96 million he sends monthly to the Hamas-run Strip, which would almost certainly plunge the coastal enclave into fighting

Hamas parliamentarians convened in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday and announced breathlessly that Mahmoud Abbas’s presidency was unlawful.
Arab media quoted the lawmakers as saying that the Palestinian Authority leader “no longer represents the Palestinian people.”
This not a surprising statement given the organizational affiliation of the speakers, as Hamas and Abbas’s Fatah party have long been at odds.

T. Belman. This is long (even after I deleted much of it) but worthwhile. In essence, since Oslo the PA was dedicated to denormalization through terror, delegitimization and defamation. To address this problem JCPA published Defeating Denormalization—Shared Palestinian and Israeli Perspectives on a New Path to Peace.. The book focused on the “successful initiative begun by Israel 20 years ago in Area C with 16 industrial zones and 30,000 employees of both Jewish an Arab owned enterprises “. Diker calls it the bottum up approach.
There is a recognition that because of the intransigence of the PA, the status quo will remain. But through joint economic activity, normalization will be acheived on the ground.
I fail to see much benefit in this. Israel will still have to deal with denormalization by the PA. It also entrenches the Muslim population in Judea and Samaria and works against promoting compensated emigration.
In the Jordan Option, we recognize that both the King and the PA have to go and we advocated for similar economic activity to take place in Jordan rather than Israel. This option is far superior to efforts to normalize on the ground.

That was in the face of implacable opposition by the autocratic PA leader Mahmoud Abbas to President Trump’s move of the US Embassy to Jerusalem that opened on May 14th, the 70th anniversary of the Jewish nation.

At one of our Rosh Hashanah meals, my son-in-law mentioned that of the team of 23 soldiers he commands in an elite IDF unit, six have left Israel. That is over a quarter. One is in Italy, two are in Germany, one is in Bulgaria, one is in Spain, and one is wandering around the world.
In other words, most of them have left Israel for less economically-sound countries. Yet, they are doing well. I asked my son-in-law to tell me about each of those soldiers. They are all salt-of-the-earth, he said. They are volunteers and of high socio-economic background, and all of them feel it is important to retain their identity. But when one of them compared the salary his wife would earn as a doctor in Israel as opposed to in Germany, he was astounded by the difference.
President Trump let the world know Tuesday that he’s sticking to his vision of America-first sovereignty, rather than cede power to UN mulitlateralists — to their great dismay. Too bad for them: Trump’s approach is working.
“America will always choose independence and cooperation over global governance, control and domination,” he told world leaders at the UN General Assembly. This country “will not tell you how to live or work or worship.” But we “ask that you honor our sovereignty in return.”
