• Talks Continue: A third round of negotiations between the United States and Iran over the future of Tehran’s nuclear program took place on April 26 in Muscat, the capital of Oman. The technical talks, mediated by Oman, lasted several hours between delegations led by White House envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Iran’s top diplomat said that the “presence of experts” in Saturday’s discussions “was very useful.” The negotiations followed two previous rounds of talks in Rome on April 19 and Oman on April 12.

1. Iran’s Defiant Posture: Tehran’s refusal to engage in direct talks, rejection of demands to dismantle its nuclear program, and threats against U.S. regional assets created a volatile backdrop.
2. Trump Administration’s Maximalist Demands: The U.S. explicitly ruled out reviving JCPOA-style limits, insisting instead on full dismantlement of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. President Trump’s threats of overwhelming military force (“bombing the likes of which they have never seen”) mirrored this uncompromising stance.

Peloni:  MEMRI’s Yigal Carmon explores the history of Al-Jolani as he morphed from a pan-Arab Jihadist to a Syrian nationalist, explaining that the fate of the people of Syria will be defined by the degree of their acceptance of the rule of Islam under this new Islamist dictator.  While it wouldn’t change the predictions for the future, it is curious that Carmon did not relate the relevance of Jolini being Turkey’s puppet.

Peloni:  Trump’s pro-Israel policy during his first term provided the context of a greater vision of security and stability in a region noted for its intractable dedication towards terrorism and chaos.  In fact, the sentiments which filled this speech should characterize the policies of Trump’s second administration.  A stronger, safer, more secure Israel makes for a stronger, safer and more secure America.  The mutual interests and values shared between these two great nations have been badly betrayed by policies put in place, both before and after Trump’s first term, and this betrayal has brought the contest between barbarism and civilization to a head, as Trump seeks to deal with the Iranian nuclear menace.  So, as his advisors and envoys seek to reassert Obama-like deals, it begs the question of whether the civilizational advocacy which Trump promoted in this speech some eight years ago has been replaced by something more timid, or if he continues to stand resolved to

“…drive out the terrorists and the extremists from our midst, obliterate this evil ideology, and protect and defend our citizens and people of the world.”

While growing up in Moscow, I never once encountered Jews who hated Israel or wished her ill. Now, in Israel as well as among Diaspora Jewry, a series of betrayals, shame and meanness are imprinted in my memory like a newsreel.

Avi really outdoes himself in this latest essay in which he explores the insidious and destructive/corrosive role which the Deep State has played in Israel’s political/security apparatus going back decades.  He also addresses the very important and very relevant question as to why Bibi never made the changes which were needed to prevent the disasters which have mounted against Israel during his earlier tenure.  Relating the roots of Judicial reform and the efforts to control those advocating it, he exposes the impossible nature of that reform to proceed, even as it was clear thirty years ago that such a reform as is being stalled today was needed then, and yet failed to mature due to the elitist power infrastructure.
