Peloni:  So much hardware…Is it reasonable that Trump would put up a false offensive posture without the will to use ultimately use it?  I believe that he would use it, and likely, he will have to use it, but most importantly, he should use it.  The Iranians have been publicly shaming the US, threatening Trump personally, threatening military bases in the region, and threatening the US armada itself.  Deterrence can never be established with those who seek the End of Times in our age, which is likely why Trump has thus far refrained from doing so.  Still, the world is watching, and as the Iranians flaunt their disregard for American, US adversaries, particularly those adversaries in the Middle East, see this as weakness, rather than as restraint.

Peloni:  Ever focusing on strategic outcomes, Martin Sherman reiterates his policy recommendation for a strategically stable outcome in Iran via dismembering of the Iranian state into its relative ethnic regions as first espoused HERE.

It is important to grasp that the protests across all aspects of Iranian society, even those which usually support the regime, did not materialize during the 12 Day War.  While there were protests which emerged during that attack, it was far less broad of protest.  Only after the recent financial collapse did we see the breadth of protest which truly threatened the regime in Tehran.  This distinction lends itself to honestly question how much of the recent dissension is targeted towards the regime, and how much is actually the result of the change in Iran’s economy.  The distinction between these motivations is quite glaring and relevant to Sherman’s argument regarding the interest of the protestors.

Peloni:  Notably, the US has refrained from any mention in recent days regarding Iran’s ballistic missile program, indicating a clear retraction in the terms being demanded of them.  Might this also indicate Trump’s interest in a less encompassing attack on Iran if the negotiations fail?  I think that if regime change was ever on the table (which I doubt), it is clearly no longer being considered.  The US, Israel and the West would all be in a so much stronger position if Trump would prove me wrong, but it looks less and less likely.

President Donald Trump made a promise to support the Iranian protesters, and then did nothing as more than 36,500 of them were murdered by the regime. Now he has three possibilities: to continue to do nothing, to launch a brief attack on Iran to show that he had “done as promised,” or to launch a massive attack that could possibly lead to regime change, but also risks a furious response by the Iranian rulers, on American bases and allies in the region, including Israel, as they would no longer feel they had anything more to lose.
