For those who haven’t noticed, the concept of “trusting the science” regarding one’s health is rapidly deteriorating in the United States. Besides the absolute failure of COVID jabs, three specific instances over the past few days have taken center stage. First, substantial evidence now shows that the rationale for antidepressants that began in the 1990s—which declared a serotonin deficiency causes depression—is based on no proof. Next, it has come to light that one of the most cited pieces of Alzheimer’s disease research in the last twenty years may have been deliberately manipulated. And most recently, reports reveal that over half of the studies testing anticancer drugs against each other used protocol rules that favored the experimental arm over the control arm.

T. Belman. My take away. They did not rule out forming a government with Bibi. They support a “Zionist” government but did not define this term nor did they mention Judea and Samaria. Their appeal was directed to centrists like Lapid and Sa’ar. They are trying to wean their voters away.  This is good news for those of us who want a right wing government.

Yamina chairwoman and Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked gave a statement to the media Wednesday evening together with Derech Eretz chairman and Communications Minister Yoaz Hendel announcing that they would run together in the elections for the 25th Knesset.

According to the agreement between the parties, the Derech Eretz party will receive the 2nd and 4th places on the list for the Knesset.

T. Belman. I honestly don’t know what is wrong with his character. Although there have been a few complaints that Trump didn’t pay his contractors, there are many stories of his largesse.  Who has come through the gauntlet that Trump has been subjected to that would come out so clean. Some complain that they don’t like his tweets. I don’t understand this complaint at all.  When Trump was chairman of a meeting and it was shown on television, I found him to be quite adept at leading the discussion.  Trump has the unique ability to communicate with the common man.  They love him and come out in droves to listen to his rallies. From what I have seen, he is also a good family man.

I allowed my distaste for Trump’s personality to override his virtues, which are considerable. Some people want Trump without his vices. I was among them — until yesterday, when I watched and listened to Tom Klingenstein’s speech titled “Trump’s virtues.”  It was masterful and shamed me that I did not make the distinction between Trump’s character and his virtues, the former being deeply flawed, the latter being almost perfect. Haaretz has an op ed dealing with Bibi’s prospects:

To reach the ever-elusive majority in this election, Netanyahu needs to recover at least some of the old-school right-wingers, those who are less easily infected by his paranoia and anti-Arab incitement and don’t feel they are underprivileged. In other words, Bibi has to appeal to the former Likudniks who disdain Bibi-ism.

I like his anti-Arab incitement and think that is a winning stance for this election. Haaretz thinks that saying “The Arabs are flocking to the polls” in anti-Arab incitement.  I see the Palestinians  who undermine Israel as a Jewish state as our enemy and value anyone who points it out.  The Arabs  and Haaretz are committed to anti- Jewish incitement.  They are the problem.  But it is right to point out that Bibi should target former Likudniks who permeated the Center/Left  Coalition.

A bloc of four Arab countries with 122 million people, all of which are peace partners of Israel, have joined together as part of a unique and large new partnership. Bahrain has joined the UAE, Egypt and Jordan in this new partnership, which will focus on a range of economic investments in the region.<

This is designed to bolster Arab economic integration. These are among the key economies of the region. The fact that the countries all have peace with Israel illustrates new possibilities for the Abraham Accords because trade is the key building block of a new peace.

Principle #4 of the Israel-centric organization advocates “vibrant but respectful debate about Israel.” Is “respectful” how J Street’s longtime president would characterize his statement in Saturday’s New York Times?

“There seems to be something particularly on the line for some parts of the Jewish community when women of color speak out,” Ben-Ami told a Times reporter in a larger story about the role of Israel as a political issue in a range of Democratic primary elections in recent months.

Facing shortages and growing populist movements – the European Union as we know it may be doomed

Europe is hurdling towards its greatest economic crisis since the 1930s. During the Covid pandemic, European governments increased demand with massive monetary stimulus packages while at the same time reducing supply by closing businesses and urging workers to stay home. This unleashed some of the highest inflation rates seen in a generation. Then came Russia’s invasion of Ukraine followed by Europe’s efforts to weaken Vladimir Putin with extensive economic sanctions. Those sanctions backfired. While the value of the ruble has risen, Europe faces energy shortages, inflation, and slower economic growth. These troubles are causing division and strife within the European Union, giving rise to stronger populist movements, and creating greater challenges for the United States both now, and in the very near future.

The visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Tehran – the first such visit since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in February 2022 – offered the three leaders an opportunity to demonstrate their partnership against the West and discuss the challenges they face domestically, regionally, and internationally. Iran viewed the summit as a chance to tighten its strategic relations with the Kremlin, in part in response to the idea of a regional defense alliance led by Washington. Just after Biden left the Middle East, Mahmoud Abbas flew to Paris to try to persuade President Macron to support Israeli-Palestinian negotiations toward a “two-state solution.” Abbas had been deeply disappointed in Biden’s insistence that the time was not yet ripe for such negotiations; furthermore, he was angered at Biden’s refusal to publicly commit, during the press conference he held with Abbas, to reopening the “consulate to the Palestinians” in Jerusalem, or to reopening the PLO office in Washington, or to removing the PLO from the list of terrorist organizations.

The polls have been predicting between 10 and 12 seats, occasionally a little more, for their united front, which is the traditional number associated with the best the old NRP was ever able to win. Ben Gvir, who hails from groups well to the right of the NRP community––the Rabbi Meir Kahana heirs, if you will––wants half, in Knesset seats, committee chairmanships, and government ministries. The response from Smotrich so far has been a big, fat, “in your dreams.”
