T. Belman. A few years ago I wrote, Israel’s public diplomacy would be greatly served by the production of historical movies.  

Similar to what Min Liberman said, I wrote,

As we know, Hollywood, which was largely created by Jews, has enormous influence around the world in fashioning and molding culture and values. Unfortunately, as I see it, it is now committed to promoting a progressive culture.

Couldn’t Jews, or anyone for that matter, create a new “Hollywood” in Israel devoted to a right- wing culture, one that reflects reality, Zionism and Trumpism.

You can imagine the impact it would have on reestablishing the Jewish narrative, as the historical one. All one needs to do is recall the huge impact on the world’s perceptions of the Jews and Israel that the movie “Exodus” had.

The government is set to launch a program to encourage foreign film productions to shoot in Israel, Finance Minister Avigdor Liberman said Thursday.

The plan will allocate NIS 45 million for foreign television and movie productions in Israel in the next two years, and will be the latest in a series of schemes attempting to incentivize Hollywood to use Israel as a backdrop, which has met with middling success.

Scorpius is first-ever system that can jam communications of multiple threats simultaneously, suitable for ground, air and sea, defense firm says

Defense contractor Israel Aerospace Industries unveiled a new electronic warfare system Thursday, touting it as the first ever that can target multiple threats simultaneously, including at varying distances.

The system, dubbed Scorpius, can disrupt the communications and radar systems of UAVs, ships, missiles and more, according to IAI.

Israel’s Religious Affairs Minister Matan Kahana is on a mission.

A member of Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s Yamina party, Kahana has set out to break the Chief Rabbinate’s monopoly on conversion and kashrut. In both cases, Kahana’s strategy is the same: break the monopoly by introducing competition. But Kahana’s mission goes beyond the technocratic – and will have repercussions for the nature of Orthodox Judaism itself.

For many, Kahana’s attempt to weaken the grip of the Chief Rabbinate over these aspects of Israeli life is long overdue. Yet, according to Kahana’s proposed legislation, competition always seems to mean Orthodox competition. Specifically, the legislation is likely to bolster the authority and influence of rabbis from the modern Orthodox/national religious community – the community from which Kahana himself comes.

There was a time when a strong shekel would have sent shockwaves through the Israeli economy. Exports were the lifeblood of the economy and if the Israeli currency gained too much against the dollar, Israeli products became less price-competitive overseas and corporate profits evaporated. Layoffs would follow, reverberating across the non-export parts of the economy.

Exports are still our lifeblood, but the days when a strong shekel was regarded as a dire threat are gone. The currency has risen no less than 4 percent over the past month and 20 percent over the last year, and today trades a 25-year high against the dollar. No one seems to be particularly bothered.

In the last few months, Anti-Defamation League national director and CEO Jonathan Greenblatt has had something of an epiphany. In articles published in Newsweek in July and then another in The Washington Post in October, he belatedly acknowledged the dangerous rise of antisemitism on the political left. In the latter, he attempted to cushion the blow he was delivering to liberals who still cling to the myth that Jew-hatred is only a problem on the right. He foolishly compared right-wing antisemitism, which for all of its violence lacks any political influence, to a Category 5 hurricane while analogizing the left-wing variant, which has open exponents in the U.S. Congress, to the more subtle and incremental threat from climate change.

After her talk and subsequent discussion took place uninterrupted, Hotovely had to be bundled out of the building under heavy security against an aggressive mob outside. Police held back protesters as they tried to rush the ambassador’s car, yelling “aren’t you ashamed” and calling Israel a “terrorist state.” Frightened Jewish students concealed their kipahs as they walked past the protesters.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) recently told state media in Tehran that they would reveal a new operation that would make Iranians who support the regime proud. It turned out the IRGC was bragging about taking over an oil tanker and taking it back to an Iranian port. The IRGC claimed they had outwitted the U.S. Fifth Fleet. But U.S. officials said the Iranian claim was “totally false and untrue.”

Gavin Newsom boasted that California “continues to lead the nation” as the only state to reach the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s yellow “moderate” tier of community virus transmission. Meanwhile, Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis was getting a media pounding for his state’s case rate.

Now California’s case rate is twice that of the Sunshine State’s.

This week’s arrest of 65 people suspected of illegal arms dealing in Israel’s Arab community is undoubtedly very important. It reinforces the sense that Israeli law enforcement has shifted into high gear in addressing crime in the Arab community – and it’s already showing results on the ground.

On Tuesday, the police also saw to it to show off in impressive fashion the weapons haul that their operation produced. With Arab mayors, the public security minister, the police commissioner and top police brass in attendance, they displayed dozens of firearms seized in the operation. That’s not a common sight, even for the Arab public.

The event attracted no notice in Israel and little elsewhere in the world, but when Iran was accepted for membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in September, it was big news in Tehran. The world has entered a new age, declared Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi. The conservative Javan daily said it “open[ed] the door to a post-American era.”

Tehran actually won’t become a member for another two years and, when it does, experts doubt it will give Tehran many tangible benefits. But it does take the country’s strategy of disentangling itself from the West a symbolic step forward. Joining the SCO, which groups a host of Central Asian countries, China, Russia, Pakistan and India, is part of Iran’s “Look East” policy, which has gained new impetus amid the stalled nuclear talks with the United States and the rise of a hard-line leadership under Raisi.

Among the participants were: Yesha Council Chairman, and Head of the Jordan Valley Regional Council David Elhayani, host of the gathering – Gush Etzion Regional Council Head Shlomo Ne’eman, Binyamin Regional Council Head Israel Ganz, Hebron Regional Council Head Yochai Damari, Samaria Regional Council Head Yossi Dagan, Beit El Regional Council Head Shai Alon, Kedumim Regional Council Head Hananel Durani, and others responsible for land preservation throughout Judea and Samaria.

The world is better for young men like Kyle Rittenhouse defending their communities.

In recent weeks, a series of high-profile criminal cases stemming from private citizens acting to protect their communities have been in the spotlight. A young Kyle Rittenhouse worked with other volunteers to protect Kenosha, Wisconsin from violent Antifa and BLM rioters. He ended up being attacked and defended himself from a violent mob, killing two and wounding one in the process.

In Georgia, a father and son, frustrated by a series of thefts, tried to stop a suspected burglar, Ahmaud Arbery. Arbery ended up charging them and reached for the son’s gun, only to be shot dead in the melee.

In a joint statement on Wednesday, Britain, France, and Germany stated that they were “deeply concerned” about the “successive breach of Iran’s nuclear obligations,” emphasizing that “unacceptable” Iranian activities “would lead to the acquisition of knowledge of nuclear weapons.”  “Iran must immediately halt production of metallic uranium and 60% enriched uranium,” “stop escalating tensions,” and “participate in negotiations without further delay,” the European troika mentioned in the statement.

Seyed Jalal Sadatian, Iran’s former ambassador to the United Kingdom, stated that the troika and the United States, Israel, and Saudi Arabia had come closer together.  He said there is a danger that the trigger mechanism (in the 2015 JCPOA) will be activated, which is dangerous for Iran.

T. Belman. Better late than never. But why must we wait till most of the offenders die before they are outed?

The Reform movement can no longer point the finger to the Catholic Church or to Hareidi Rabbis claiming purity for themselves.  They too are guilty not only for the transgressions but also for the cover-up.

I wonder if religious institutions are more prone to this than are people in general.
