I woke to voice notes from Mazen, his Suwayda Druze dialect thick with tears.

“Jolani’s ISIS are massacring us,” he said, referring to the forces of Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, formerly known as Jolani from his Al-Qaeda days. “Please talk to anyone you know in Washington to help us,” he pleaded.

Over the next five days, I exchanged information with Mazen, Muhannad, Makram, Gadeer, Shadi and other Druze in Syria, Lebanon and Israel, piecing together the unfolding horror. I was the only non-Druze in the group.

The Syrian revolution was not an uprising for liberty, freedom, or democracy. It was a manifestation of Sunni Islamists, backed by Turkey and Qatar, venting their rage against the rule of Assad, supported by Shia Islamist Iran. Peloni:  Khaled Hassan, a foreign policy and national security researcher and a Council Member of President Herzog’s Voice of the People Initiative, speaks with reporter Daniel Ben Ami regarding a striking shift in Egyptian strategy vis a vis Israel and the West.  Drawing on several recent events, including the US sale of a long sought advanced air defense weapon system to Egypt, and shifting terminology of ‘hostages’ by Sisi, Hassan presents his conclusion that the US has recently given up on its policy of relocating the Gazans and Sisi will be removed in the near future.  I question if Hassan has it backwards, ie rather than Washington having surrendered it’s position on Gaza to Egypt, that it is Egypt who has surrendered its position to Washington.
