Since its creation, the State of Israel has been a battleground for staff in presidential administrations, especially those run by Democrats. As Joe Biden begins his administration, it seems appropriate to consider whether we will once again see a disproportionate amount of infighting on the question of Israel, and whether the resulting policy will redound to Israel’s benefit or its disadvantage. Looking back at the history dating to its founding in 1948, one can plausibly argue that Israel has been better off with Democratic fractiousness than with harmony.

The original decision over whether to recognize Israel in 1948 set up one of the most bitter policy fights in U.S. history. Nearly the entire national-security establishment opposed recognizing Israel, including Secretary of State George Marshall. The surrounding Arab populations vastly outnumbered the small number of Jews in Israel and around the world. Recognizing Israel seemed to be a bad bet.

Jordanian lawmaker Yanal Fraihat said Tuesday that Prime Minister Bisher al-Khasawneh told parliament that “Jordan has been subjected to an economic blockade during the past three years because of its political positions,” during discussion about the
political situation of the kingdom in a heated session.

In 2019, King Abdullah II said that crises in the region have cast a shadow over Jordan, and Amman has paid the price for its positions, during his Speech from the Throne at the opening of the Fourth Ordinary Session of the 18th Parliament.

A high-ranking Iraqi delegation arrived in Iran [in late December], carrying a message from Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi to the Iranian regime. The delegation, according to a report in Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, was headed by a former director of the Iraqi Prime Minister’s Office. Its intention was to request that Iran exercise greater control over the myriad of militias that it supports in Iraq.

The visit came at a tense time for Iraq, [ahead of the January 3] anniversary of the killing by the US of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani and Iraqi Shia militia chief Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. There are rumors of possible Iranian retaliation against US targets in Iraq, probably to be delivered by one or the other of the militias. These rumors and tension reflect a volatile and unsettled reality.

Hundreds of thousands of Trump supporters did what people do when they believe their government has abandoned them – they went to Washington to protest. Unfortunately, a small percentage, (whether or not there were a number of Antifa members among them) succeeded in spoiling the non-violent nature of the protest and attacked the American Congress building. No Senator or Congressman or police officer was hurt but one woman, a 14 years military veteran, who was unarmed, was shot by police and killed.

We cannot be too timid in our repudiation of political violence. Violence begets more violence, and those who participated in violence must be sanctioned by the legal system.
