What a shame! We thought he was a friend of Israel. Perhaps he should lose his credibility as ambassador in Israel. That would create an international event that everyone would watch.
Probably, Trump should be speaking to him and performing damage control. However, Trump’s performance in the current presidency has left a lot to be desired, including how he deals with allies. Of course, that may be for show, but in that case, who is he trying to impress?

Is it possible that he is so gullible and easily manipulated? I would prefer to doubt that, but as I already said above, who is he trying to impress? Your suggestion would explain it, but not why he hasn’t been replaced.
