In New ‘Change’ Coalition It’s Bennett Against Everybody Else

By David Israel, JP

Yamina chairman Naftali Bennett is going to be the first religious Jew to serve as prime minister of Israel, but judging by the past two weeks, his job would be less like politics and more like plate juggling, and with his tiny, nickel yarmulke he’s probably going to have to pick up that thing off the floor a lot of times. As things are shaping up, it’s Bennett against everyone else in the “change government” coalition, with Bennett enjoying the rare pleasure of fighting for control within, while being the subject of unprecedented, raw hate from the outside.

The most recent episode was reported by Channel 13 News: one of the operating principles of the Bennett-Lapid coalition is that all controversial issues must first be debated within the group and that each one of the partners has veto power over every topic, particularly the crucial ones such as the settlements and the “peace process.” According to Channel 13, Blue&White chairman and Defense Minister Benny Gantz who just came back from meetings in the White House was asked by Bennett if the subject of settlements freeze had been raised, and Gantz replied that yes, and added that President Joe Biden wants to pick up the talks with the Palestinian.

Now, technically Gantz went to Washington as defense minister in the Netanyahu government, so Bennett can’t quite accuse him of betraying the most fundamental agreement of the Lapid-Bennett coalition, where Gantz is slated to carry on as DM. But the insult was clear, and the message to the incoming PM from Gantz was: you’re not the boss of me.

But we haven’t even scratched the surface. On Tuesday, Israel Hayom reported that the next Transport Minister and Labor chairwoman Merav Michaeli plans to cut by 50% the road works in Judea and Samaria. Can she do it on her own without the consent of her right-wing coalition partners? We’ll find out.

Here’s another humiliation for Bennett, which he said was rain: in a Tuesday meeting at the home of New Hope chairman Gideon Sa’ar, it was decided that Sa’ar’s number two, Ze’ev Elkin, slated to be Housing Minister, agreed to also fill the job of liaison minister between the government and the Knesset. In the press release that followed, the politically savvy Elkin was described as the new white hope of the incoming government, especially when it comes to passing a budget.

The humiliation part is that governments don’t need a liaison minister. They have a coalition whip, who is picked from the ranks of the PM’s party. And Bennett just appointed a new coalition whip, Yamina MK Idit Silman. But behind closed doors, his buddies Sa’ar and Lapid forced him to accept someone who would reign above his whip.

Finally, the “change” bloc is expected to debate on Wednesday a bill to restrict the tenure of prime ministers, clearly targeting Benjamin Netanyahu. And while New Hope, Yesh Atid, and Israel Beiteinu are pushing for a stricter, borderline-penal bill, with a cooling period that would mean barring Netanyahu from running to the Knesset altogether for four years, Yamina wants a softer bill. They agree to the two-term, 8-year limit, but see no justification to prevent Netanyahu from running for the Knesset as a rank and file Likud member.

A Yamina representative told Channel 12’s political reporter Amit Segal: “No, there was not and will not be an agreement regarding the prevention of running for the Knesset. This is a proposal that came up, was not agreed upon and neither will it be.”

We are beginning to see the reality of assigning the role of prime minister to the leader of a six-member Knesset faction. At best, Bennett will be primus inter pares (first among equals). At worst he will be a short-lived joke.

But as we reported on Tuesday (Lapid’s Coalition Deal Keeps Netanyahu Out, Handcuffs Bennett, Favors Arabs, Reform), Bennett is stuck in this SRO apartment, with or without heat and hot water. The coalition agreement stipulates that Bennett will not be able to hold any other ministerial position, not even that of a deputy minister, should the new government be replaced as a result of a no-confidence vote in the Knesset.

Yes, Naftali, it’s yet another plate you’ll have to juggle, and you’re not even in office yet – watch that yarmulke…

  1. This is from Israel Hayom. Written by their columnist Amnon Lord.

A coalition bent on election rigging
By considering a bill that singles out Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Bennett and Lapid are undoing Israel’s democracy.

By proposing a bill that would ban Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from running in future elections the so-called “pro-change coalition” has proved that it is an election-rigging bloc.

A law that targets one individual makes it clear that an anti-democratic government is about to impose itself on the people of Israel. They are assassins of the people’s will. Unfortunately, there is no law yet against such a type of assassination. For the past year and a half, left-wing incitement organizations in black shirts and with black flags rocked the country at the height of the coronavirus pandemic.

It was an anarchist revolutionary movement led by individuals who seek to oppress large sectors of the Israeli public. If such a government comes to power, it will normalize the madness unleashed by former Prime Minister Ehud Barak, Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid, and the Balfour demonstrators.

Netanyahu is not a threat to the emerging coalition. He is the winner of the latest elections. Gideon Sa’ar, Naftali Bennett, Avigdor Lieberman, and Lapid stole the elections. Each one misled their voters, some by promising not to sit with Lapid because they knew the nation dislikes him. But in a democracy, you cannot simply get rid of someone through legislation.

One can already hear the fabric of Israeli society beginning to fray. The public will not agree to this, and it will revolt.

Media reports expose Bennett’s true colors. He does not sound like a would-be prime minister but as one threatening Netanyahu, asking him to go so that the “change coalition” won’t have to legislate him out of politics for good. That is why this whole thing reeks of a coup.

  2. Likud MKs join Barkat’s rally in Tel Aviv

Likud MKs Miki Zohar, Avi Dichter, and Uzi Dayan are participating in the Nir Barkat conference in Tel Aviv.

“No one pressured us not to come,” the MKs told Arutz Sheva.

Edelstein has said he is going to run for Likud Chairman also. Other possible contenders are: Israel Katz and Danny Dannon.

Bibi has said he will run again and wants immediate Primaries which would give him a leg up. This is being resisted by some. The speculation is if the Likud sits in the opposition a few months or longer this will favor challengers to Bibi.

  3. Now Likudniks are starting to want Bibi out. Yes by a plurality he has been the most popular politician in Israel. Also the most hated. Likud insiders are now saying, even publicly in some cases, that all the enemies he made makes it impossible for him to form a right-wing government in-spite of a large majority of right-wing/religious MKs.

This means he has failed now 4 straight times. He has tried more and more nasty tactics and lies to try and keep Bennett from becoming Prime Minister.

The two main things Bennett ran on was he wants to be Prime Minister and he does not want a fifth election. His unity government is not composed in an ideal manner he and his advisors readily admit. However the composition of the Cabinet and Security Cabinet means New Hope and Yamina will have majority control of the security cabinet and have equality with the left and center in the Cabinet.

Let us wish them well and hope they do good things for the benefit of Israel. Some things may unify Israel and some things the UTJ and Shas have forced on Bibi or gotten him to go along with that the majority of Israelis do not like maybe changed such as moderation in Conversion and who knows maybe marriage.

Requiring all state education systems to teach Math, English, Science, Computer Science will benefit the whole country and yes the Haredim (some who wished to stay in the 18th century). Yes, the unity government will not be able to some things a pure right-wing possibly could have been imagined to do.

Such as legalizing all the out-posts (Bibi promised to do this but it turned out to be another campaign false-hood). Why was sovereignty NOT APPLIED in part of Judea/Samaria while Bibi was PM and Trump POTUS? Why were the PA not stopped from building in Area C?

Bibi did some very good things but his time is up and should be up for the sake of Israel.

  4. Bibi is a bigger problem than is generally understood. Bibi is for the status quo. That makes him the obstacle to the Jordan Option. That means under Bibi the conflict continues.

The Gulf States including Saudi Arabia want the “Palestinian problem” to disappear and they keep their distance from Bibi and Israel because of this.

Bennett and Saar also are against the status quo and in favour of the Jordan Option. That’s the main reason they want Bibi out.

Why do you think Yamina and New Hope are supporting this government even though it looks horrible and very bad for the right.. That’s because its not so bad and they all want to move on from the status quo. The Biden administration also wants the status quo. They don’t want a solution. That’s why they promote the two-state solution.
