If Trump’s “deal” goes through, the damage won’t be limited to the America-First president’s legacy.

President Donald Trump is going full speed ahead with his disastrous Iran deal, and that’s not good news for Americans, Israelis, Iranians, or anyone else. Fox News reported Wednesday that the Trump administration finally disclosed the details, which include “plans for immediate waivers on Iranian oil exports, a framework for at least $300 billion in reconstruction and economic development, and a 60-day negotiation period aimed at securing a final agreement on Iran’s nuclear program.”
Trump himself boosted the deal before the press on the same day, with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on his right and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on his left. Trump was in a particularly jovial mood and cracked quip after quip, with an appreciative Lutnick playing Ed McMahon and cackling appreciatively along with the boss, while Rubio stood by stone-faced.
It’s easy to see why Rubio is so glum. Fox noted that “the administration’s willingness to grant immediate oil export waivers comes despite officials’ own skepticism about Iran’s intentions. While defending the agreement, one senior U.S. official said negotiators entered talks with ‘the full expectation that they will lie and they will cheat,’ arguing that any final agreement would require extensive monitoring and enforcement mechanisms.”
Indeed. And those monitoring and enforcement mechanisms are almost certainly not going to be put in place. The Islamic Republic of Iran is still in power, and will soon have hundreds of billions of dollars with which it can rebuild and resume its jihad, and Iran’s crown prince on Tuesday sounded a warning about what Trump’s deal could mean for everyone concerned, and for the world at large.
Reza Pahlavi, the son of Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, whom the Islamic revolution deposed in 1979, stated Monday: “Any deal with this regime will ultimately fail. It can never be trusted. It will continue to blackmail the world, brave, innocent Iranians, and spread terror and instability in the region and internationally, including on the streets of the UK.”
Pahlavi added: “Dealing with this regime will fail and we will all face the consequences. The regime’s 47-year war against the Iranian people continues. Just as it has never made peace with its own citizens, it will never truly make peace with the world. Any agreement that preserves this regime or its remnants will fail. The Iranian people will not accept it.” Despite Trump’s bizarre behavior and the disquieting events of the last few weeks, Pahlavi concluded on a hopeful note: “With or without international support, the people of Iran will overthrow this regime. Freedom will come to Iran.”
The crown prince is absolutely right. The leaders of the Islamic Republic will never give up at the negotiating table something that they believe is a divine responsibility. They believe that Allah has commanded them to wage jihad against the Great Satan, the foremost exponent of representative government, the chief competitor to their vision of a world securely under the rule of the perfect law of Allah. Nor will they ever give up their jihad against Israel, for they believe that any land once ruled under Islamic law belongs to Muslims forever, and that they must fight, by the command of Allah, to get it back.
Trump has looked into the faces of those who harbor this implacable hostility, and thinks that he sees reasonable men with whom he can deal. And so it looks as if Trump has given himself over to Qatar and its friends, haters of Israel and lovers of Islam and jihad such as Tucker Carlson, who have convinced him, against mountains of evidence, that “rational men” are indeed now leading the Islamic Republic of Iran, and that Benjamin Netanyahu is the problem for wanting to defend his country from aggressive attacks upon civilians.
No good will come of Trump’s deal with Iran, which gives the Islamic Republic far, far more than Barack Obama ever dreamed of giving them. Trump is risking the destruction of his presidency and his legacy, and has imperiled the future of not only Israel, but the United States as well, now that he has confirmed that the world’s vaunted sole superpower is actually a paper tiger.
The crown prince said: “Dealing with this regime will fail and we will all face the consequences.” Yes.
