• U.S. Message to Lebanon: The United States is reportedly increasing pressure on the Lebanese government to issue a cabinet decision demanding the disarmament of the Iran-backed Hezbollah terrorist organization. Without this commitment, Washington will no longer dispatch U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Thomas Barrack to oversee negotiations with Beirut’s government or put pressure on Israel to halt military operations and withdraw from southern Lebanon. “The U.S. is saying there’s no more Barrack, no more papers back and forth — the council of ministers should [make] a decision and then we can keep discussing. They cannot wait any longer,” a Lebanese source told Reuters.

Peloni:  Khaled Hassan, a foreign policy and national security researcher and a Council Member of President Herzog’s Voice of the People Initiative, speaks with reporter Daniel Ben Ami regarding a striking shift in Egyptian strategy vis a vis Israel and the West.  Drawing on several recent events, including the US sale of a long sought advanced air defense weapon system to Egypt, and shifting terminology of ‘hostages’ by Sisi, Hassan presents his conclusion that the US has recently given up on its policy of relocating the Gazans and Sisi will be removed in the near future.  I question if Hassan has it backwards, ie rather than Washington having surrendered it’s position on Gaza to Egypt, that it is Egypt who has surrendered its position to Washington.

Peloni:Matt Williams gives a fair analysis of the Ukraine situation following Trump’s shortening his previous 50 day deadline to a 10-12 day deadline seems to leave little to no chance for even an attempt at peace, raising many questions.  So, where might Trump’s policy of upending a long negotiating period for an impossibly short one ultimately lead?  How might Russia be expected to react to this reversal of policy?  And most importantly, how might Russia’s trading partners react?
