Since the outbreak of the war against Iran on February 28, 2026, leading Qatari media outlets, chief of them Al-Jazeera, have continued to serve as mouthpieces of the Iranian regime, despite the fact that Iran has launched hundreds of missiles and drones at Gulf states, including a few at U.S. military facilities in Qatar itself. These media outlets provide Iranian officials with an open platform, without reservation or criticism; present the Iranian narrative as fact; echo and amplify Iranian conspiracy theories; and promote pro-Iranian messaging.[1]

Peloni:  How about this turn about?  The opposition to support the US given the nominal request being made by Trump was itself rather revealing about the state of the alliance between the US and its erstwhile allies.  Even as they have come to capitulate in supporting Trump’s request, it is a remarkable distance of support and capabilities to what Israel has demonstrated in recent weeks and over the past year.  Of course, partnerships indicate common interests and like minded values.  While no two nations are a perfect match for such things, Europe in particular has demonstrated once again that it has meandered far from where it once stood in decades past, even as they were at the time far from a lock-step supporter of US leadership.  As Trump noted, there will be consequences for Europe in light of these changes, even with their move to finally acquiesce to Trump’s request.

Score one for Donald Trump. European leaders—including Keir Starmer and Emmanuel Macron—initially rejected his request to help escort commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump responded by openly questioning America’s commitment to NATO’s collective defense, pointedly referring to these countries as “allies” in quotation marks and calling the relationship a “one-way street.” Speaking to reporters at the White House, he framed the Hormuz standoff as a “litmus test” of NATO’s reliability.

Peloni:  Netanyahu addresses the important role benefits coming from the partnership between Israel and America.  He also cites Trump’s independence and determination to prevent Iran gaining the means of striking the US with nuclear and conventional means.  An important point he raises is that Israel did act alone in attacking Iran’s Pars gas fields, and that they agreed in acquiescence with Trump’s request to not do so again – all while careful not to address whether the US had been aware of the attack before hand.  On this point he also argued that the future solution to dealing with choke points in the Persian Gulf will be thru the use of pipelines which go thru Israel to the Mediterranean Sea.  He also challenges the democracies of the world to wake up to the dangers facing them before it is too late, that he is hopeful but not certain that Iran will soon have a new govt, that spiking energy costs will soon come down, and that the war will end sooner than people expect, that the Iranian Caspian navy was seriously degraded, and that the Iranian people will be responsible for any regime change which might come to be.

Peloni:  The coordinated opposition to Trump’s request among allies in both Europe and Asia demonstrates the influence and threat able to be brought to bear by China as it blocks nearly all assistance for Trump in keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and the price of energy around the world low.   Notably, Trump has often referred to his happy preference to repay betrayal in kind with interest, so as Stephen Bryen notes below, “One can be sure there will be a reckoning.” Arguably, this payback has already begun with Sec. Hegseth’s recent comment about arming Ukraine:

“We’re also still dealing with the environment that Joe Biden created, which was depleting those stockholds and not sending them to our own military, but to Ukraine!”

“Ultimately, we think these munitions are better spent in our OWN interests at this point, and this kind of funding bill is going to ensure that we’re properly funded going forward.”

Peloni:  It is interesting that while Iran continues to strike its Sunni neighboring states, they are now declaring that military options are now on the table.  The question arises as to why these options have yet to be employed, and the answer should be understood to be the same aspect of Arab society which recently drew Saudi Arabia towards its hardline position regarding Israel, namely the Arab street.  These Muslim monarchies and dictatorships have few considerations which are so dear to them as their own long term stability.  Til such time as the Arab street becomes favorably inclined towards military action in coordination with Israel against Iran, none of these countries will act against Iran, even in response to the massive attacks which they have all already faced.
