Every day now in Eretz Yisrael, or so it seems, missiles and drones launched and fired by Shiite Muslims in Iran and Lebanon frighten hundreds of thousands, even millions of Jews. These projectiles manage to murder and wound some, destroy their homes and all their possessions. Scores of Jewish families in Israel are now not only homeless, they have only the clothes on their backs.

In an important interview with JNS, Dr. Martin Sherman,  founder of the Israel Institute for Strategic Studies, a member of the Israel Defense & Security Forum research team, describes the strategic view of Israel’s war with Iran, the broader regional conflict, and internal tensions within Israeli society with the Israeli Deep State. Sherman explains that Israel reached the current situation as a result of years of restraint, a growing desperation within the political opposition, and underestimating threats which might be should have been resolved long ago. In doing so, Sherman describes the October 7 attacks as a turning point which has come to strengthened Israel’s resolve to shed the previously adopted restraint while acting in its own interests, particularly while it has the means to do so under the current administration in Washington.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has lowered the minimum age to 12 for participation in war-related activities. No, it’s not that boys and girls will be sent off to fight. Instead, children as young as 12 will now be used to help man checkpoints, to go on patrols (presumably to watch out for saboteurs, or for signs of discontent and defeatism among the population), and to help with logistics. The Iranian state needs all the help it can get — even from its children. Israeli troops have reached the Litani River in some areas, Israeli media reported, as the IDF continues to destroy Hezbollah infrastructure across southern Lebanon. One soldier was killed and seven others were wounded to varying degrees during the fighting on Sunday.

Peloni:  While we should applaud the increasing number of Arab voices calling for the fall of Iran’s evil regime, the question arises as to when these words of support will be transformed into deeds of action.  Indeed, the Sunnis are under a state of siege by the Iranian missile attacks, and instead of engaging the enemy as if it is a mortal threat, they are only emboldened enough to deter these missile strikes thru defensive means, leaving the dangerous action over the skies of Iran to the American and Israeli forces.  It is time for the Arab nations under assault to act as if their regimes and their people are being specifically targeted for destruction, because they are.  So while I congratulate the increasing number of Sunnis calling for an end of Iran’s regional domination, we need to see the Arab walk come to match the Arab talk by joining the fight which is saving these Arab nations from further attacks.

Peloni:  There has been a great deal of talk of defeatism regarding the Iran war of late.  John Spencer, a foremost expert on urban warfare, provides a serious, meticulous analysis of various paths which might lead towards victory.  In doing so, he makes this notable observation towards the end of this important essay:

“War is not a checklist. It is the alignment of ends, ways, and means under conditions of uncertainty. Options can be sequenced, layered, or applied simultaneously across domains. The United States has not run out of options. It has not even used all of them.”

Make no doubt about it.  This war is not over, and victory is closer to us than is defeat, for now in any event.

The U.S.-Iran war has been underway for 29 days now. It is increasingly difficult to distinguish real strategic and military expertise from politicized opinion, speculation, and narrative. Too many people jump immediately from where we are today to a full-scale ground invasion. They assume the only option is for U.S. forces to seize Tehran, secure nuclear material by force, destroy a supposed million-man army, and then get pulled into another decades-long nation-building effort or fight a Maoist-style insurgency. That is not analysis. That is shallow thinking rooted in outdated and often biased mental models of war.
