Confronting Conformity and Collectivism with David Mamet

It is our own individual responsibility that must play a part in saving the order of things.

By

I first encountered the work of David Mamet in my undergraduate English seminar on modern American drama. We read many of his works, but after all these years, what sticks out is Mamet’s 1987 screenplay “House of Games,” which he also directed. I was in my very early 20s, only a few years after my arrival to America from Bosnia. Although I spoke English well, the nuances in Mamet’s use of the language were something very new to me.

The Defense Ministry is planning to advance a controversial housing project in the E1 Area of the West Bank after the Israeli government withdrew the plan in January amid international pressure, and assured the Biden administration that it would not be moving forward with it.

The ministry’s Civil Administration body that authorizes West Bank construction published on Tuesday its agenda for a July 18 meeting to discuss objections to projects that have received initial approval. Two E1 plans totaling 3,412 housing units were the only ones on the docket.

Biden seeks to boost relations with Palestinians before Israel visit – Amb. (Ret.) Danny Ayalon

According to the report, the Palestinian Authority has been attempting over the past two years to implement a plan created in 2020 that would see parts of the Oslo Accords appealed. Sa’ar considering new gov’t with Likud – report

T. Belman.  The Likud Camp plus Saar have 58 seats. To form government without elections, they would need to coopt three defectors from Yamina.  Sure looks doable.

The Justice Minister reportedly held talks with a Likud representative about the option of forming a new government without dissolving the Knesset.

By GIL HOFFMAN, JERUSALEM POST STAFF

Israel’s Justice Minister Gideon Sa’ar is seen speaking at the Jerusalem Post annual conference at the Museum of Tolerance in Jerusalem, on October 12, 2021.

What flows from being designated by Israel as a criminal organization

T. Belman. In reading this brief,  I get the impression that Israel doesn’t need more stringent legislation.  It just needs to apply the designation ruthlessly.

At least according to Adalah

Adalah’s Expert Opinion: Israel’s 2016 Counter-Terrorism Law and 1945 Emergency Regulations Regarding the Outlawing of Six Palestinian Human Rights and Civil Society Groups

[…]

Severe and Immediate Legal Implications of these Designations and Declarations

The consequences of the designations and declarations are severe, for the organizations, their staff and members, and their supporters. First, the organizations themselves can no longer operate and continue with any of their activities, including, for example, the crucial work the six groups conduct in defending the rights of Palestinians and exposing Israel’s violations of international law.

Heavy Crackdown In Iran As Protests Show No Sign Of Ending

An overwhelming presence of security forces prevented a large protest gathering in Abadan Monday night, but demonstrations took place in other Iranian cities.

Videos and reports published on social media show tens of security forces on each street, preventing movement of people in Abadan, and the government resorting to tear gas for dispersing crowds before gatherings could get larger. In some videos firing of military weapons are also heard but news coming out of Abadan is sketchy.

Israel’s Tightrope Act Between America and Russia

A tough test for Bennett’s statesmanship.

By Joseph Puder, FPM      May 31/22

For the first time since Israel began its aerial bombing over Syria, a battery of S-300 aerial defense missiles (ground-to-air) manned by Russian crews fired at an Israeli jet earlier this month. The missile missed its target, and apparently was not intended to shoot down the Israeli jet, but merely to serve as a warning. Putin’s Russia wanted to signal to Israel that it has perceived a tilt by Jerusalem toward Ukraine in the ongoing conflict between the two countries, and that it will not be without a price for Israel to pay.

Trudeau takes another major step towards totalitarianism

By Olivia Murray,  AM THINKER

(See also Andrea Widburg’s Canada plans to follow in the path of the world’s worst dictators.)

Last week marked the conclusion of the annual conference of the World Economic Forum in Davos, an event with particular focus on the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. These goals, collectively known as Agenda 2030, are a set of objectives designed to be a “shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.” The Agenda includes seventeen Goals, like “No Poverty” and “Zero Hunger” – however, underneath the facade of humanitarianism is a malevolent truth: Agenda 2030 is nothing more than an assault on national sovereignty and common people by the power-hungry global aristocracy.

Israel signs free trade deal with the UAE

T. Belman. The UAE gave tep0id criticism of Israel’s activities on the Temple Mount.  Ignore it. This is what counts.

Israel and the United Arab Emirates sign comprehensive free trade deal – the first of its kind between Israel and an Arab country.

Barbiva and Abdulla bin Touq al Marri?????: Anuj Taylor, Strap Studios

Israel and the United Arab Emirates signed a comprehensive free trade agreement Tuesday morning, the first time the Jewish state has signed such a deal with an Arab country.

Israeli Economy and Industry Minister Orna Barbiva signed the deal with the UAE Minister of Economy Abdulla bin Touq al Marri.

The deal marks the culmination of months of negotiations to hammer out the details of the comprehensive agreement, which will eliminate tariffs on 96% of trade goods and streamlines regulations for trade between the two countries.

Criticize multiculturalism and become a pariah

Famous author Uwe Telkamp is cancelled for saying that most Muslim migrants are not fleeing persecution but looking for social welare.

“I have to justify even being German, to dare to refer to Goethe. Suddenly, you are like a pariah.” This is how Uwe Tellkamp speaks at the Süddeutsche Zeitung. His is the cultural case of recent years.

Not only because in 2008 Tellkamp published the great novel “The Tower”, which sold over a million copies and describes the last years of the German Democratic Republic through the educated middle class of Dresden. It has won numerous literary awards and has been celebrated by all feuilletons and literary critics.

The Believer

T. Belman. What impressed me most about this article was the elegant prose it contains.

Prose aside its about the Reform Movement and its future.

Rabbi Ammiel Hirsch sees his unapologetic Zionism as the key to Reform Judaism’s survival and flourishing, while others see it as a betrayal of the movement’s universalist aims

BY ARMIN ROSEN, TABLET         JANUARY 26, 2022

“Here’s what I learned from decades of studying and embracing liberalism: The liberal mindset is one of openness and doubt,” Rabbi Ammiel Hirsch of the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue, a flagship of the Reform Movement, said during a Friday night sermon not long ago. “True liberals are never so sure of themselves. We acknowledge and embrace complexity. It’s why we rely on science and evidence. Every place where people live requires repair. One of the key insights of liberalism is that I could be wrong. And I am open to being convinced.”

Palestinianism: The global Intifada – opinion

Palestinianism denies the historical fact that is Eretz Yisrael, and denies the right of the Jewish people to re-establish a state there.

As Palestinianism spreads throughout the world, it attracts support because it presents itself as a national liberation movement that seeks to free itself from Israeli occupation, colonialism, oppression and persecution. An examination of its real agenda, however, available in the PLO Covenant, Hamas Charter and its daily messages, reveals its true intention: isolating and destroying Israel – a second Holocaust, if they could.

Israel had previously designated Hamas under the Counter-terrorism Law but what has it done about it?

T. Belman.  This is a legal brief submitted by the Pro-Palestinian Adalah who represents them legally. I am trying to find out what are the consequences from being so designated.

Israel’s 2016 Counter-Terrorism Law and 1945 Emergency Regulations Regarding the Outlawing of Six Palestinian Human Rights and Civil Society Groups
23 November 2021

Israel deploys various legal measures in order to criminalize the activity of Palestinian human rights and civil society organizations, stop their operations, seize their assets, and levy penalties against their directors, staff, and supporters. One such measure is the 2016 Counter-Terrorism Law1 – also referred to as the Anti-Terror Law – which, inter alia, authorizes Israel’s Minister of Defense to designate organizations as “terrorist organizations”, even if they are engaged in lawful activities using legal means. In addition to the Counter-Terrorism Law, the 1945 Defense (Emergency) Regulations – introduced by the authorities of the British Mandate for Palestine –
empowers a military commander to declare an organization as an “unlawful association”.

Israel must end policy of appeasement on Temple Mount

Discrimination against Jewish prayer on Judaism’s holiest site is obscene.

By  Farley Weiss, ISRAEL HAYOM    May 30/22

The Jerusalem District Court has just allowed criminal charges against Jews who say the Shema prayer in a public place on the Temple Mount, the Jewish people’s holiest site. In her ruling, Judge Einat Avman-Muller wrote that freedom of prayer “is not absolute, and it should be superseded by other interests, among them the safeguarding of public order.” In other words, the reason for this obscene ruling is antisemitic opposition to such prayers by Muslim radicals.

It is clear that opposition to Jewish prayer on the Mount, whether from Jordan or the Palestinian Authority, is the epitome of virulent antisemitism. Why would anyone oppose peaceful Jewish prayer if they are not virulent antisemites? And why should Israel capitulate to antisemitism rather than provide security for Jewish worshippers?

Israel is coordinating with the United States and Gulf nations on a process to normalize its ties with Saudi Arabia, Foreign Minister Yair Lapid said Monday.

“We believe that it is possible to have a normalization process with Saudi Arabia. It’s in our interest,” Lapid told Army Radio.

“We’ve already said that this is the next step after the Abraham Accords, to talk about a long and careful process,” he added, referring to the 2020 US-backed normalization deals Israel reached with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco.

Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine Backfires on Xi Jinping

By Ching Cheong, EPOCH TIMES

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has created serious pressure on China and particularly on Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leader Xi Jinping, as evidenced by the recent spate of speculations about Xi losing power.

Such speculations range from a “soft coup d’état” against Xi to a “voluntary abdication.” Furthermore, some China observers recently noted that Xi has been missing from the front pages of Beijing’s official mouthpiece. Premier Li Keqiang has been receiving more media attention lately. In a rare move, People’s Daily dedicated an entire page to Li, publishing a speech he delivered at a work conference for CCP cadres on April 25.
