Tony Badran Discusses the Disastrous Lebanon Deal

Peloni:  A highly recommended interview with Tony Badran, a foremost expert on all matters relating to the Levant.  He explains that there are in fact only two facets surrounding the deal which matter.   The first is American coercion from the Obiden faction in Washington led to Bibi accepting this deal and the second is that a diplomatic infrastructure has been erected in which America has to authorize Israel’s actions in Lebanon.  As Badran references here, this sort of limiting control over Israel’s sovereignty was something which the Obiden faction has been earnestly pursuing for some time now and which Badran first discussed in his must read article, The Ottoman American Empire.  While a friendly incoming American administration will shortly be in control of this mechanism, it has the potential of building tension between Trump and Bibi to the limit of their differing perspectives on what Israel should and must do going forward.

they also scare me to death.

It really does offer a mind awakening understanding of the situation in the Levant, and if it doesn’t have the affect of really scaring the reader after reading his essays, they probably didn’t read it carefully.

His articles are great but they also scare me to death.

I have to go and read some Arutz7 stuff afterwards to sooth myself.

That remains as perhaps my favorite piece by Badran. Like all of his essays, its relevance and import only grows with time.

The main weapon of coercion that the Biden-Binken administration used to bludgeon Israel into submission and with draw from Lebanon was a U.S. resolution demanding an immediate and permanent Israeli withdrawal from the other major front in the war, Gaza. The U.S. threatened to vote in favor of this resolution unless Israel complied with its demands for a withdrawal from Lebanon.

The resolution contained numerous other extremely punitive provisions in addition to the demand for an immdiate Israeli withdeawal. Israel was ordered to immediately end its alleged “attemptsto starve” the population of Gaza, to allow the imediate entry of hum”humanitarian: aid to all areas of Gaza, supervised and distributed by UNWRA, and in the quantifies specified by UNWRA; that it cooperate completely and with no reservations whatsoever with UNWRA as the UN’s designated representative in Gaza; that Israel immediately permits all Gazans to return to their homes in all parts of Gaza. It also recommended that all countries impose trade sanctions on Israel if it did not comply with these demands.

The resolution also called for the immediate release of all hostages, whether dead or alive, and their exchange for all of the Hamas and all other Gaza terrorists held by Israel. But it did not make this a condition for the cease-fire and all the other punitive measures that it proposed to impose on Israel.

The U.S. ambassador to the U.N. gave the failure of the resolution make the release of the hostages a condition for the cease-fire and other measures demanded by the resoluion. He said the U.S. therefore “reluctantly” vetoed the resolution, evn though it agreed with all of its other provisions.

All of the other 14 members of the Council voted for the resoltion. All ten of the non-permanent members elected to the council for its current term, led by Algeria, jointly sponsored the resolution.

One of the few things that the Trump administration, when it takes office in January, will be unable to undo is a Security Council resolution. This is why it proved to be a “sword of Damocles” that Biden-Blinken were able to hang over Israel’s head in order to force its withdrawal from Lebanon.

Eitan Davidi, head of the town of Margaliot, criticizes the ceasefire with Lebanon, saying it compromises northern residents’ safety.
