In the below linked article, Lee Smith chastises Vice President JD Vance for his efforts to emphasize his own political ambitions, rather than advancing President Trump’s agenda. He contends that Vance has been building a 2028 presidential campaign since entering office, cultivating influence throughout the administration while prioritizing his personal political brand over administration objectives. This was placed on full view in a week during which Trump was focusing on foreign and domestic election tampering to dealing with the return of war with Iran. While the second highest executive in the US govt consented to conduct a 3 hour interview, Vance instead chose to prioritize the promotion of his memoir. Even in doing so he used that moment to lobby false allegations against unnamed Israelis trying to undo Vance’s achievements with the MOU with Iran, when in fact the MOU had clearly been a failure from the outset with no need by anyone but the incorrigible Iranians to charge with causing that failure.
Smith criticized Vance’s remarks which suggest that Israeli interests sought to undermine his negotiations with Iran, and even more Vance’s allegation that some Israelis did so while seeking perpetual war. Lee also make the important observation related to Vance reviving speculation surrounding Jeffrey Epstein and possible Mossad connections which was handled in such a way as to specifically recall the allegations raised against Trump in regards to the Epstein tribulations. Lee notes that the Israel, Israel, Israel charges now being raised against Trump are in fact the newest derivation of attempts to control Trump’s foreign policy using allegations of foreign influence over Trump which began with the Russia, Russia, Russia allegations in his first term.
Smith directly rejects Vance’s assertion that an Israeli-backed influence campaign derailed his Iran memorandum of understanding while noting that Vance entirely mischaracterized a Time magazine article on which his comments were supposedly based, noting further that it described a pro-Israel messaging effort responding to anti-Israel campaigns rather than a covert operation to sabotage negotiations with Iran. He further cites Senator Tom Cotton’s statement that there was no intelligence indicating such an influence campaign and contends that Iran’s own actions, rather than not Israeli lobbying or influence, was the actual cause for the agreement’s failure.
An important aspect of Smith’s article raises the reality that Vance repeatedly refuses to accept responsibility for his own political failures while blaming these policy failures on Israel and Jews. He also notes that Vance’s characterization of Israelis as seeking endless war echoes longstanding antisemitic tropes and reflects a broader refusal to accept responsibility for unsuccessful policies. Smith also addresses Vance’s choice of advisers and intermediaries in the Iran negotiations, questioning his reliance on such figures as Pakistan’s Asim Munir and analyst Trita Parsi.
Smith concludes that grievance and victimhood have become the defining themes of Vance’s anticipated 2028 presidential campaign, but Smith also notes that the greater implications of Vance going rogue, while dealing with his own deficiencies as the administration is focused on policy matters of import, is that the responsibility for this lies with President Trump himself for allowing Vance to do so. It is noteworthy at this point to raise the divide which was palpable between Trump and Tucker Carlson for many many months before Trump addressed it openly. Are we to expect a similar delay before Trump addresses the growing divide with his own vice president?
