Unity negotiations between the Blue and White and Likud parties were halted Monday evening, several hours after reports leaked detailing an agreement between the two sides.

Sources in the Blue and White party said that after reaching understandings on all issues, the Likud sought to re-examine the operation of the Judiciary Committee.

“As a result, the negotiations have been stopped. We will not allow any change in the functioning of the Judiciary Committee and the resulting damage to democracy,” the party said.

PM Netanyahu addresses the Nation on the eve of Passover

PM Netanyahu’s Statement

On Wednesday, before the Passover seder, everyone will stay at home from 18:00 until 07:00 on Thursday

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, this evening (Monday, 6 April 2020), at the Prime Minister’s Residence in Jerusalem, issued the following statement:

“Citizens of Israel, we are in a fateful week, for the world and for the State of Israel. It is fateful because in the battle to block the coronavirus, these days will determine the direction – progress or retreat, and for many people, life or death.

In New York, the epidemic is running wild. President Trump told the American people that the worst is yet before them. In Europe, the countries struck by corona have succeeded in slightly reducing the number of dead. This provides optimism but the overall picture continues to be chilling. Hundreds of funerals take place in Europe on a daily basis; people are fighting thedisease.

President Trump takes control of Intelligence Community

By John Dietrich, AMERICAN THINKER

The firing of Michael Atkinson, the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community, is another step toward the gradual exposure of the Deep State.  Atkinson had been nominated for the position by Trump in November 2017.  In his letter to Congress the President explained that he had lost confidence in Atkinson.  Progressives were up in arms.

Former CIA director John Brennan called President Trump’s shakeup in the intelligence community a “virtual decapitation.”  Nancy Pelosi stated, “This latest act of reprisal against the Intelligence Community threatens to have a chilling effect against all willing to speak truth to power. The President must immediately cease his attacks on those who sacrifice to keep America safe.”  Adam Schiff tweeted, “Trump’s dead of night decision to fire ICIG Michael Atkinson is another blatant attempt to gut the independence of the Intelligence Community.”  Schiff tweeted this at 9:39 PM, so he could not have received it in the “dead of night.”  However, it sounds more sinister than late Friday evening.  Senator Chuck Schumer said,  “Michael Atkinson is a man of integrity who has served our nation for almost two decades. Being fired for having the courage to speak truth to power makes him a patriot.”  And Sen. Mark Warner said, “In the midst of a national emergency, it is unconscionable that the president is once again attempting to undermine the integrity of the intelligence community by firing yet another intelligence official simply for doing his job.”

Blue and White said willing to bend on annexation, but not on judge appointments

T. Belman. Both of these issues are deal breakers for Likud and Yamina. They won’t compromise on them nor should they.

Sources in party quoted as saying Likud insistence on veto power over judicial nominations could see talks end without coalition agreement

The Blue and White party is reportedly willing to compromise on West Bank annexation in order to form a government with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud, which has demanded support for the move.

Likud’s insistence on veto power in the appointment of judges, however, could see the coalition negotiations blow up without agreement, the Kan public broadcaster quoted sources in Benny Gantz’s party as saying Monday morning.

Blue and White has been holding coalition talks with Likud on forming a government in which the two would rotate as premier, with Netanyahu serving first. The negotiations picked up pace after Gantz was elected Knesset speaker with the backing of Netanyahu’s right-wing bloc, causing Blue and White to split.

Scoop: Inside the epic White House fight over hydroxychloroquine

AXIOS

The White House coronavirus task force had its biggest fight yet on Saturday, pitting economic adviser Peter Navarro against infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci. At issue: How enthusiastically should the White House tout the prospects of an antimalarial drug to fight COVID-19?

Behind the scenes: This drama erupted into an epic Situation Room showdown. Trump’s coronavirus task force gathered in the White House Situation Room on Saturday at about 1:30pm, according to four sources familiar with the conversation. Vice President Mike Pence sat at the head of the table.

  • Numerous government officials were at the table, including Fauci, coronavirus response coordinator Deborah Birx, Jared Kushner, acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf, and Commissioner of Food and Drugs Stephen Hahn.
  • Behind them sat staff, including Peter Navarro, tapped by Trump to compel private companies to meet the government’s coronavirus needs under the Defense Production Act.

The first ever report by the special appeals court system for migrants was issued on Sunday, noting that the volume of new Ukrainian and Georgian illegal migrants in 2018 far outpaced those of African origin.

Established in 2014 to lighten the case load on the District Courts – which were becoming swamped with a spike in cases of Africans who came to Israel illegally but claimed refugee status – it has been difficult to follow the migrant courts.

Proceedings in the courts are not publicized as well as proceedings in other courts, and most results are obtained by the media only when an NGO or specific lawyer involved chooses to provide them.

Ex-IDF generals: West Bank annexation could cause collapse of PA

T. Belman. Let’s hope so.  From day one Trump has been cutting off funding for the PA and UNRWA.  The Trump Plan will accelerate the process of destroying both of them and Oslo.  Soon Mudar Zahran will take over the leadership of Jordan in place of King Abdullah and in that position he will become the leader of all Palestinians.

These generals have lost the capacity to be think out of the box and be innovative.

Partial West Bank annexation would ignite the Palestinian Authority-controlled territories and cause the PA to collapse, the nongovernmental group Commanders for Israel’s Security (CIS) warned over the weekend.

“Unilateral annexation has the potential to ignite a serious conflagration,” the group said, adding that “any partial annexation is likely to set in motion a chain reaction over which Israel will have no control, leading to the collapse of the Palestinian security agencies and of the Palestinian Authority.”

In a new “Victory Commanders Forum” video released Sunday by the “Middle East – Israel Forum”, former IDF officials express their professional opinion on the ‘Deal of the Century’ and the historic opportunity to turn Jewish settlement in Judea and Samaria from a burden into an asset.

The “Victory Commanders Forum” brings together former senior IDF commanders who have joined forces to turn the Israeli army into a fighting unit whose primary goal is the complete defeat of the enemy. Members include Maj. Gen. Gershon HaCohen, Brigadier General Zvika Vogel, Brigadier General Yossi Kuperwasser, Brigadier General Avigdor Kahalani, Col. Moshe Peled and others.

Israel’s constitutional crisis has been postponed, not resolved

By Evelyn Gordon, JNS April 2, 2020

After years of leftists crying wolf about democracy being endangered, Israel finally experienced a real constitutional crisis last week. That crisis was temporarily frozen by the decision to form a unity government, but it will come roaring back once the coronavirus crisis has passed.

It began with Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein’s refusal to let the newly elected Knesset vote to replace him as speaker and culminated in two interventions by the High Court of Justice. I’m one of very few people on my side of the political spectrum who considers the court’s initial intervention justifiable. But its second was an unprecedented usurpation of the prerogatives of another branch of government, in flagrant violation of legislation that the court itself deems constitutional.

Edelstein’s refusal, despite its terrible optics, stemmed from a genuine constitutional concern, and was consequently backed even by Knesset legal adviser Eyal Yinon, who had opposed Edelstein many times before and would do so again later in this saga. The problem was that neither political bloc could form a government on its own, yet the proposed new speaker came from the faction of Benny Gantz’s Blue and White Party that adamantly opposed a unity government. Thus whether a unity government was formed or Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s caretaker government continued, the new speaker would be in the opposition. Read more…

Coronavirus: China’s Great Cover-up

By Giulio Meotti, GATESTONE INSTITUTE  •  April 5, 2020

  • Bats were not, it seems, sold at Wuhan’s seafood market. The Lancet noted in a January study that the first Covid-19 case in Wuhan had no connection to the market.
  • One more person has just disappeared. Ai Fen, a Chinese physician, who… claimed her bosses silenced her early warnings about coronavirus, appears to have vanished…. The journalists who saw what happened inside Wuhan have also disappeared.
  • “No one has been able to study it. How can you say it’s not a release from a lab if you can’t go to the lab? Indeed, we have seen Beijing do its best to prevent virologists and epidemiologists from actually going to Wuhan.” — Gordon Chang, in Die Weltwoche, March 31, 2020.
  • That is another major problem. The potential major investigator on Wuhan’s origin, the World Health Organization, is now accused of being “China’s coronavirus’ accomplice”.
  • Why is China trafficking in dangerous viruses in the first place?
  • “Debate may rage over which center it is, but at this point it seems undeniable that a center has been directly involved with research on viruses, although not necessarily on the creation of a virus.” — Father Renzo Milanese, AsiaNews.it, March 13, 2020.

POLL: Biden has more supporters. Trumps supporters more likely to vote.

Poll: Trump Voters Have Made Up Their Minds

By Michael Austin, WESTERN JOURNALISM

In a national poll released Thursday, former Vice President Joe Biden appears to be edging out President Donald Trump in November’s general election.

However, as was the case with the many 2016 polls declaring Hilary Clinton the likely winner, appearances can be deceiving.

While the former vice president has more generalized support, Trump’s base is much more loyal.

The poll, conducted between March 27-30 for Grinnell College by Selzer & Co. of Des Moines, Iowa, is based on phone interviews with over 1,000 U.S. adults aged 18 and over and has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.

The specter of triage versus a crashed economy

SEE ALSO:  Why Accepting Two Million COVID-19 Deaths May be Better Than a National Lockdown

By Lynne Lechter, AMERICAN THINKER

Italy implemented harsh triage principles when its medical system was overwhelmed with a flood of COVID-19 patients, first  denying medical treatment to those afflicted over seventy-five years.  Without regard to an individual’s physical age or lifestyle, seventy-five, and poof — one’s elders’ existence was declared disposable.  The triage logic ordained that a younger patient had a greater likelihood of survival and a more productive life ahead.

Well, that didn’t last long.  As the system further collapsed, their triage threshold plummeted: no medical treatment, for COVID-19 sufferers, for anyone sixty or older.  Obviously, the Italians didn’t buy the meme that sixty is the new forty.

A crash of the United States’ fragmented medical system is one of the fears that have compelled political leaders,  in the majority of states,  to shut down all but essential establishments.

Netanyahu controls what happens next

T. Belman. Israel Policy Forum is left of center.

By Michael J. Koplow, ISRAEL POLICY FORUM     April 2,2020

It has been a week since Benny Gantz upended the structure that had ruled Israeli politics for the past year and a half, putting himself forward as a candidate for Knesset speaker in order to launch unity negotiations with Prime Minister Netanyahu and fracturing Kachol Lavan in the process. Yet despite his stated intention to create a government with Netanyahu in order to deal with the coronavirus emergency, a unity agreement has remained elusive. It turns out that after having three hotly contested elections that centered around one man’s fitness for office, dropping the central premise of Kachol Lavan’s reason for being and working out a deal is easier said than done. Reports have identified a host of sticking points between Netanyahu and Gantz, from the control of specific ministries to the timeframe and mechanics of a prime ministerial rotation to the fate of West Bank annexation, none of which were worked out before Gantz publicly announced his intention to join with Netanyahu.

No government expected by Passover

T. Belman. Gantz’s mandate expires in a week.  Then Netanyahu gets the mandate to form the government.

Gantz informed the public on Friday that “essential and critical issues remain to be decided in coalition talks.”

Blue and White and Likud negotiating teams met late Saturday night in an effort to finalize a coalition agreement that could be brought to a vote in party institutions on Sunday and the Knesset on Monday, before the parliament adjourns to its summer recess.

But sources in both parties said over the weekend that even if that would happen, Israel still would have no government before Passover, because legislation must be passed to facilitate the government’s formation that will be challenged in the High Court of Justice.

One such bill would enable the swearing-in of two prime ministers, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu serving the first year and a half of the term and Blue and White leader Benny Gantz the next year and a half.

INTO THE FRAY: Netanyahu and the “Art of the Possible”

By Martin Sherman, IISS

Otto von Bismarck, (1815-1898) the German statesman, credited with the unification of Germany (1871,) and who served as its first Chancellor until 1890, famously defined “politics” as “the art of the possible

This is certainly true in the dizzyingly volatile kaleidoscope realities of Israeli politics.

Indeed, only few days ago, Israeli PM, Benjamin Netanyahu, was facing the grim prospect of being dispatched to the Opposition and the looming specter of a minority government, led by his then-major rival, Blue & White’s Benny Gantz, and totally dependent on the dominantly anti-Zionist Joint List.

However, the dramatic events at the end of last month, when Gantz, together with just over half the MKs of the Blue & White faction, unexpectedly decided to join Netanyahu in an emergency coalition, radically changed the political landscape—and with it, the possibilities open to Netanyahu.

Britain’s main opposition Labour party on Saturday said that Keir Starmer had been elected as its new leader, replacing Jeremy Corbyn who resigned after its crushing December election defeat.

The 57-year-old former chief state prosecutor won 56.2 percent of the vote of more than 500,000 Labour members, defeating Corbyn loyalist Rebecca Long-Bailey (27.6%) and backbencher Lisa Nandy (16.2%) for the top job. Angela Rayner becomes the new deputy leader.

“Congratulations to @Keir_Starmer, the new Leader of the Labour Party!” the party announced on Twitter after a three-month leadership campaign.
