Peloni:  It is relevant to note that peace talks including the leadership of the LAF with Israel broke down this morning.  The goal line of having the LAF act as an honest independent party is going to be Iran’s failsafe in these negotiations, and this was always going to be the case.  The way to eliminate Iran’s dominiation of Lebanon lies in dealing with the Iranian leadership in Iran, not in having the complicit LAF dealing with the Iranian proxy in Lebanon.  Cut off the Iranian funding, THEN follow thru in Lebanon.

The US had pressured Israel to adhere to a real ceasefire with Hezbollah. In the past, the ceasefires were only in name, and strikes continued against one another.

A new round of Israel-Lebanon talks began in Washington on June 23 in a complex environment because Iran is trying to salvage its Hezbollah proxy.

Iran has tied the conflict in Lebanon to the Iran talks in Switzerland. Therefore, the US has pressured Israel to adhere to a real ceasefire with Hezbollah.

Peloni:  David Brody makes some very important reflections while considering recent events with Trump’s Iran deal.  First, it is important to note that it is Trump’s deal, and that no matter how well or how poor Vance applies himself, the current negotiations are entirely Trump’s undertaking.  That is why he has repeatedly made unexpected pronouncements regarding the negotiations.  Beyond this, Vance is placing his entire political credibility on the line base on how he proceeds in this negotiation, even beyond whether the negotiations are successful or not.  Notably, Vance has played his cards thus far in hosting this gambit in a manner which might be argued to diminish his political hopes.  Also Brody indicates below, I have never forgotten Trump’s dead pan jest about blaming this entire fiasco on Vance, as I too did not interpret that  Trump’s ironic statement was actually intended to garner any laughs.  Regardless of the earnest efforts by Trump and Vance to gain Iran’s support for any deal, I still remain convinced that these attempts will ultimately prove fruitless as the Iranians are predictably who they are.

So in two months time, this will likely leave Trump with the unenviable choice of either punting further with a further extension on the farcical negotiations, surrendering entirely to Iran while claiming a faux victory, or resuming the war while still in need of some ground force to bring about any victory, and this choice will come just shortly before the looming midterms.  Only one of these options would leave Vance in a better light, and that would require the Iranians offering him a clear political victory just before the crucial US midterms.

Peloni:  Once again, it is being proposed that Israel should TRUST Lebanon to contain or control Hezbollah.  While this gambit would allow Israel and Washington to each save face, it belies the reality that Lebanon has been complicit in supporting Hezbollah for decades.  This only way that Hezbollah can be ‘disarmed’ is to first see their masters in Iran fall from power, and thereby end the subsidies by which Hezbollah maintains its financial support.  The advent of cheap drones menacing the world makes even the elimination of missiles not enough of a solution to protect the North.  Lebanon must be freed of its Iranian masters, and instead, Washington has seen fit to allow Iran to raise significant revenue streams.  Who do you think will receive the first check from the revitalized Iranian cophers?  I think the answer to this question is quite clear

The old formula of “land for peace” held that Israel would cede territory in exchange for Arab recognition and normalized ties. During Operation Epic Fury, Iran used Chinese space assets and satellite imagery to track and target American military bases and operations in the Middle East. The Financial Times reported that Iran had secretly purchased a satellite from Earth Eye and ground-based signal-processing services from Emposat, both Chinese companies. Together, these purchases gave Iran an advantage it was not previously known to possess.

Naturally, Beijing denies allowing the use of commercial space systems for military purposes. But these developments raise a serious concern: given the ambitious pace of China’s space program, it may soon be able to wage war from space.

Peloni:  This is the point which I have been making for some time now.

Trump having created the linkage between Israel responding to Hezbollah attacks in Lebanon and US negotiations with Iran only serves to secure the Lebanese people in the grip of Iran and its occupying proxy force, Hezbollah.  While shading Israel efforts to end Hezbollah’s dominion over South Lebanon as being Israel trying to ‘kill everybody’, Trump has effectively turned his back on the growing number of people in Lebanon demanding a future free of the Iranian tyranny which holds the Lebanese Christian community as dhimmis.  Trump also similarly ignored the cries of minority communities in Syria as he promoted the Islamist govt of Jolani which instituted its own tyrannical genocidal attacks  over the local Syrian minorities.  It seems relevant that this is also reminiscent of Trump’s efforts to safeguard the IRGC over both the freedom loving people of Iran, as well as the people of the entire region who simply want to throw off the Iranian suzerainty that Trump is inexplicably securing in place.  The support for such tyrannical regimes as these isolates and diminishes dissenting voice, and these voices are the real source from which any chance of peace in the region might arise.  This is the point which Trump should be championing rather than ignoring and thereby crushing the aspirations of those who earnestly want peace in the region.

Many of the Shi’a in Lebanon are now looking for a political alternative to Hezbollah, that has dragged them into a disastrous war with Israel. Hezbollah’s war against Israel that began on October 8, 2023, has led to the destruction of many buildings of the Shi’a stronghold in Dahiyeh, southern Beirut, and hundreds of thousands of Shi’a have now been displaced from eastern Lebanon. For those who try to follow the politics of the Nile, the gyrations are dizzying. On June 17, U.S. President Donald Trump met with Egyptian President Al-Sisi at the G-7 and took a pro-Egyptian, anti-Ethiopian position on the waters of the Nile.[1] Then the United States sanctioned the anti-Ethiopian “hardliners” of the rebel Tigray Peoples’ Liberation Front (TPLF) on June 18. Only last month, the U.S. signaled a willingness to lift some sanctions on Eritrea, “the North Korea of Africa,” which is currently the great patron of the TPLF. Eritrea is now backed by Egypt, which seeks to rein in Ethiopia, especially on the question of building more dams on the Ethiopian Blue Nile.[2]
