Bitter rivalry—attempts at reconciliation—and a new crisis: This is how the cycle of relations between Fatah and Hamas has looked for many years. It seems that this cycle will not be broken in the near future, which significantly reduces the possibility of the Palestinian Authority’s control of the Gaza Strip “the day after.” In the absence of another solution, that rivalry could pave the way for a temporary Israeli military rule in Gaza.

Senator Chuck Schumer stood at the Senate podium and laid out his vision of the “four obstacles to peace”. These, according to the Senate Majority Leader were, Hamas, “right wing Israelis”, PLO terrorist leader Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Having equated Israeli conservatives to Hamas, Schumer demanded that Israel call a new election and remove its current government  from power. And if Israelis did not choose to obey, he warned that the “United States will have no choice but to play a more active role in shaping Israeli policy by using our leverage to change the present course.”

That is an obvious euphemism for anything from the withdrawal of aid to economic sanctions.

This isn’t the direction the 2024 election cycle had to take. But whether Israelis or pro-Israel Americans wanted this to happen, support for the Jewish state has become a partisan issue. That conclusion became impossible to avoid last week when Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer gave a speech that signaled his support for a change in administration policy about Israel’s post-Oct. 7 war on the Hamas terrorist organization. Schumer didn’t just back up President Joe Biden’s smears about Israel’s conduct. He also blamed the continuation of the conflict on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu while calling for what amounts to regime change in Jerusalem.
