How to reconcile the harsh treatment of Russia with the kid-glove treatment of Iran

The US is facing two bad actors Iran and Russia. If they were equally bad you would expect the US would mete out the same treatment to both.  But they are not equally bad.  Iran is demonstrably much worse yet the US treats them with kid gloves whereas the US treats Russia as harshly as they possibly could, short of waging war against it.  Is there a unifying theory?

Iran wants to extend its hegemony over the UAE and Saudi Arabia  and perhaps others. It already has done so over Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Lebanon. It continually calls out “Death to Israel” and  “Death to America.” Iran has no qualms about killing American soldiers.  In Iraq alone, as of 2019, its militia have killed 603 American soldiers according to the Military Times.  No one doubts that it will destroy Israel if it can.

Meanwhile, the cost of the average home has gone from $250 thousand to $400 thousand just since 2019. And those higher home prices have also driven up the cost of rent. So now Americans are paying a third of their income for rent. That’s the highest ratio since records were kept.”

In mid-December 2022, an F-35 aircraft crashed in the US, leading both America and Israel to ground a significant portion of their F-35 fleets.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Sunday submitted an official Letter of Request (LOR) to the US and to Lockheed Martin for the purchase of a third squadron of 25 F-35 aircraft, which will eventually bring Israel’s total complement to 75 aircraft.

The LOR was submitted to the US’s Joint Program Office (JPO) after an announcement on July 2 that Israel had internally approved seeking the additional 25 F-35 aircraft and would now start working on eventually submitting an LOR, culminating in Sunday’s announcement.

The issue at hand is that until such time as Israel approves a constitution, the High Court has no right to insert its policies and values. Neither can it legislate from the bench. Baharav-Miara today (Sunday) submitted her position on the petitions against the law, in preparation for the hearing on the matter before a full panel of all 15 Supreme Court justices next Tuesday.

It is undeniable that the judiciary and juries in the federal courts in the District of Columbia are almost uniformly left-wing partisans, a key part of the post-constitutional era brought into being by former president Obama. I do not know how or whether this can be rectified, although I expect a resounding victory for Republicans in 2024 followed by a congressional reshaping of the jurisdiction of these courts and their staffing may be the only solution.
