At first glance, Israel appears to have no choice but to buckle under US pressure. After all she needs the resupply of munitions and the protection of the US veto at the UNSC.

The NYT reports The U.S. wants Israel to use elite forces to rescue hostages and kill Hamas leaders.

“Mr. Biden wants Israel to switch to more precise tactics within three weeks, or soon thereafter. The officials asked for anonymity to discuss the president’s thinking.

“The new phase that the Americans envision would involve smaller groups of elite forces that would move in and out of population centers in Gaza, carrying out more precise missions to find and kill Hamas leaders, rescue hostages and destroy tunnels, the officials said.”

Peloni:  This will prove to be a decisive change in the RNC.  Now McConnell remains as the last leg of the old party leadership who must be removed, and he is trying to promote his protege, Sen. John Thune for the role when he steps down in November.  It would be a mistake for Trump to support Thune as McConnell’s successor, as it was a mistake for Trump to have supported McConnell for re-election in 2020, just to be betrayed by him in the months and years which have followed.  If the party chooses wisely, MAGA could potentially control the entire leadership apparatus of the Rep Party.  Time will tell.

State of the Union: The former president’s daughter-in-law will probably be an asset in fundraising for the Trump campaign.

But there are three reasons why it is a big mistake to discount the value of conquered territory. First, the occupation by Israel of enemy territory (while evacuating the local population for its own protection) is considered by Israel’s enemies to be a painful loss, and the possession of territory can serve as a bargaining chip in political negotiations.

The number of civilian casualties in Gaza has been at the center of international attention since the start of the war. The main source for the data has been the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry, which now claims more than 30,000 dead, the majority of which it says are children and women. Recently, the Biden administration lent legitimacy to Hamas’ figure. When asked at a House Armed Services Committee hearing last week how many Palestinian women and children have been killed since Oct. 7, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said the number was “over 25,000.”

US President Joe Biden is expected to announced in his State of the Union Address on Thursday night that he will order American forces to coordinate with the Israel Defense Forces in an “emergency mission” to build a “temporary seaport” for Gaza.

The temporary port is intended to open a maritime route for the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza from Cyprus, an option that has been discussed for several months. There is no indication that the US will use the port to allow the Gazans to escape from Gaza, and it appears that for now, the US plans to continue leaving the Gazans trapped there, as Egypt has been doing along its shared border at Rafah.

Ehud Barak, noteworthy Israeli army general with a highly decorated military career, acquired public notoriety last year for his role in masterminding, organizing, and financing, the sweeping protest campaign against judicial reform in Israel.  Throughout 2023, prior to the slaughter of October 7, he and his like-minded political allies sowed chaos in the streets, intimidated citizens, mobilized strikes, incited army reservists, and brought Israel to the precipice of civil war. They engaged in a so-called non-violent struggle for democracy, speaking on behalf of entrenched elites in Israeli society, while charging that the elected government of Binyamin Netanyahu was illegitimate. Now, with the Gaza war still unfolding, the protesters are back in the streets.
