Why Have Negotiations?

Shoshana Bryen, JPC • June 13, 2022 • Jewish News Syndicate

In December, the Biden administration quietly proposed a five-government summit to enhance prospects for the “two-state solution” it promotes as key to Middle East regional security. Israel, Jordan, Egypt, the Palestinian Authority and the United States would meet to discuss, discuss … discuss … what?

Israel apparently waited several months to see if something useful would materialize but has now said it will not participate. No surprise. Negotiations work best; in fact, they work only when the parties have a common endgame. Hashing out the mechanisms, concessions, policies, gains and losses is the way to get to an agreed-upon future. These five governments have no common view.

When Reagan and Begin Discussed Expelling Palestinians

T. Belman. This title is very misleading because what was discussed was the “problem” of the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. Begin proposed that the Palestinians in Lebanon be transferred to other countries. No where in this report is there mention of “expelling”.  Remember that the Arab League committed themselves to preventing the resettlement of any Palestinian refugees.  They want them kept in limbo so as to apply pressure on Israel to take them back.

Two weeks after the outbreak of the First Lebanon War, which Israel embarked upon 40 years ago this month, Prime Minister Menachem Begin and U.S. President Ronald Reagan met in Washington.

Among the items on the agenda: the need to find a “final solution” to the “problem” of the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. The Americans agreed that Israel had a right to take action against the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization), which had entrenched itself in Lebanon after being expelled from Jordan in the 1970s, and used it as a base to launch attacks within Israel.

Sa’ar pans opposition bill ‘completely politicizing’ selection of Supreme Ct. judges

T. Belman. I am shocked by Sa’ar’s move. I support Likud’s Bill totally. I reject the notion that to have the Knesset pick the Judges rather than the Selection Committee is anti-democratic.  Just the opposite.

If the government is elected by a right wing public, why not allow them to appoint judges who share their view point? Why is that not democratic?

In the US, the government picks the judges subject to Senate approval. It always picks Judges which reflect its views on the constitution. How is what is being proposed any different?

Justice minister vows to torpedo proposal, which he says will ‘eliminate’ the court’s independence; warns a Netanyahu government will endanger Israeli democracy

Justice Minister Gideon Sa’ar on Monday assailed an opposition bill aimed at reforming the selection process for Supreme Court judges, vowing to torpedo it.

According to the bill — submitted by lawmakers from the Likud, Shas, United Torah Judaism and Religious Zionism parties — Supreme Court judges, including its president and vice president, will be appointed by the government, with final approval given by a vote in the Knesset plenum.

Thanks to Saudi Arabia, Pakistan’s Recognition of Israel Is Now Inevitable

Pakistan can’t afford to remain the last Sunni Islamist bastion resisting Saudi normalization with Israel. But the country’s rulers, both political and military, want safeguards against a frenzied domestic backlashKunwar Khuldune Shahid
By Kunwar Khuldune Shahid, HAARETZ    JUNE 13/22

The visit to Israel of a group of Pakistani-Americans and Pakistanis last month has mainstreamed the debate surrounding the formalization of ties between the two countries. From newspaper columnsto blogsto YouTube videos, to Twitter threads in the local Urdu language – all are dedicated to the discussion. While the most visible narrative still betrays Islamist hyperbole and antisemitic hysteria, even the hyper-nationalist internet fora in Pakistan have found space for arguments in favor of recognizing Israel.

That change is in the air is clear from the surprisingly robust defense of former state television journalist Ahmed Quraishi, who was part of the Pakistani delegation that visited Israel last month, who himself isn’t the only prominent voice championing the formalizing of ties between the two countries today. Despite being sacked by the government affiliated Pakistan Television Cooperation, and being targeted by the recently ousted Imran Khan, many mainstream journalists have come to Quraishi’s defense.

Judge Robert Bork, once said about former Israeli Supreme Court Chief Justice Aharon Barak:

“… Barak’s court can turn ordinary legislation into a constitution, force it on the nation, and then announce that it can prevent any democratic amendment. In this, Barak surely establishes a world record for judicial hubris.”

With great foresight, Bork referred to a danger that has only grown with time.

Los Angeles high school sued over ‘racially divisive, anti-Semitic’ ideology

The Los Angeles-based Brentwood School called the allegations of anti-Semitic teaching ‘a work of whole fiction’

By Adam Sabes | Fox News

Los Angeles area private school is being sued by a father of a student who attended the school, claiming that it treats Jewish people as “oppressors” and operates under a “racially divisive, anti-Semitic” ideology.

The lawsuit, filed by Jerome Eisenberg in Los Angeles court, alleges that the head of Brentwood School, Michael Riera, pulled a “bait-and-switch with the school’s curriculum and culture” after accepting parents’ tuition payments. Eisenberg alleges in the lawsuit that Riera and Brentwood School have a “scheme to transform the school under a racially divisive, anti-Semitic ideology that seeks to indoctrinate children to reject Western values.”

Israel Becomes a Spy-Sat Superpower

By Tamir Eshel,

The Israeli Ministery of Defense (IMOD) OFEK program (Horizon in Hebrew, often referred to as OFEQ) will be awarded the prestigious ‘Israel’s Defense Prize for 2022? for the group’s achievements that jointly developed, produced, and deployed Israel’s most advanced observation satellite – OFEK-16. The award will be given in a ceremony to be held on 14 June at the residence of the President of Israel, Mr. Itzhak Herzog. The program is led by the Space directorate at the Directorate of Defense Research & Development (DDR&D) of the Israeli Defense Ministry (IMOD), with IAI as the prime contractor and Elbit Systems as the payload provider.

Israel’s most advanced electro-optical observation satellite, OFEK-16, was launched into space on 6 July 2020, equipped with a new, high-performance space camera developed and manufactured by Elbit Systems. In August 2020, the IMOD released the first high-resolution images from the satellite, showing the Tadmor world heritage site in Syria. On this occasion, IMOD also unveiled the national infrastructure for the production of space cameras, a joint project of the IMOD and Elbit Systems. The national infrastructure includes laboratories for the production of advanced space-qualified optical instruments and a vacuum chamber that simulates the conditions in space and is used to test the satellite camera before it is launched for its mission in space.

Why is Israel so inept at expelling Arabs?

If there truly was a “decades-long effort” by the government to “force” Arab residents to leave, surely, they would have been gone long ago. Op-ed.

Shimon Hatzaddik (Sheikh Jarrah) and surrounding areaNati Shohat/Flash90

(JNS) Did you know that Israel is currently carrying out a “systematic mass expulsion” of Palestinian Arabs from its territory?

You don’t? Neither do I.

Some prominent groups on the Jewish left are making that claim, however—thus raising an interesting question: Why are the Israelis, who are so advanced when it comes to high-tech, medical, scientific and military matters, so incredibly inept when it comes to expelling Arabs?

Yamina MK: If Judea and Samaria law doesn’t pass, we’ll apply sovereignty

T. Belman. Why resort to a temporary law needing renewal every 5 years. Instead extend sovereignty outright to all of Area C or at least the settlements and the Jordan Valley. The only problem is that Likud would rather bring down the coalition rather than vote for sovereignty. After they succeed in bringing down the government they can always pass the sovereignty law in three months.

Deputy Minister Abir Kara (Yamina) on Friday commented on the political crisis in an interview with Channel 12 News, and said that he had spoken with MK Nir Orbach, who is contemplating his next move after receiving an offer with the Likud.

“Nir is strong and stable. I understand Orbach’s anger after he sees that Ra’am and Meretz vote against the coalition,” said Kara.

Why are Jewish leaders laundering the Labour party?

T. Belman. The problem in both the US and the UK is with left leaning Jews who can’t be weaned from the Democratic Party and the Labour Party, respectively.

The belief that it has dealt with its antisemitism is distinctly premature

By Melanie Phillips

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and Labour party leader Sir Keir Starmer, May 2022

With the Conservative Party in crisis and the “red wall” northern constituencies reportedly ending their brief love affair with the Tories, the Labour Party is said to be back in the political game after its near-death experience under Jeremy Corbyn.

Everyone apart from Boris Johnson appears to believe that, unless the Conservative Party changes course, Labour’s current leader Sir Keir Starmer has a good chance of becoming prime minister at the next general election.

WSJ: A Jordanian Future for the West Bank?

T. Belman. The author served as a Min of Foreign Affairs for a Labour Government. I have marked in red what incensed me in his first paragraph. I couldn’t read on.

IDSF made reference to such a confederation as one of plans that have been suggested. I was dead set against it when I first read of it and wrote to Brigadier General (res.) Amir Avivi, the CEO of  IDSF telling him so and included this article.  The Jordanian Confederation/Federation Plan as per the IDSF with Israpundit’s critiqueOur discussions are ongoing.

With an independent Palestinian state as remote as ever, the idea of a Palestine-Jordan confederation deserves a new look

By Shlomo Ben-Ami, WSJ    June 9/22

In April, the Jewish holiday of Passover overlapped with the Muslim holiday of Ramadan, raising tensions throughout the Israeli-occupied West Bank, which is home to approximately 2.5 million Arabs and 500,000 Jews. Ominous clashes took place at Jerusalem’s Haram alSharif, known to Jews as the Temple Mount—a holy site for both faiths that has become a defining symbol of the Palestinian national cause. Conflict there has the potential to escalate into an apocalyptic confrontation that would inflame the entire Muslim world.

By J. Christian Adams, DAILY CALLER

The 2020 election was full of chaos and irregularities. States like Georgia and Pennsylvania took days to finalize election results. Mail ballots were found on floors of apartment floor lobbies. Dead people were even voting in states across the country!

Unfortunately, people have been voting from beyond the grave since well before 2020. (RELATED: SNEAD: 2020’s Nightmare Election Process Has Come Back To Haunt Pennsylvania. Here’s What Needs To Change)
