Will PM Netanyahu’s Legacy Be Permanently Thwarting Application of Israeli Law to Jordan Valley?

By Dr. Aaron Lerner 10 June 2020

Shalom Yerushalmi reported this morning that Israeli diplomatic sources say Prime Minister Netanyahu has decided not to apply Israeli law to the Jordan Valley in order to avoid a crisis with Jordan.

If indeed Mr. Netanyahu has adopted this argument, his legacy may be establishing that there can never be conditions on the ground for applying Israeli law to the Jordan Valley:

#1. Good relations:  do not apply Israeli law to the Jordan Valley to avoid a crisis with a friendly country.

Sovereignty plan ‘time window’ open from July to September

T.  Belman. This is the first time I have heard mention of “Netanyhu’s Sovereignty Plan”.  At the same time no mention in this article of the Trump Plan. Could it be that what is behind that is the desire to decouple the 30% “annexation” from the Trump Plan.  Then no settler will be against it.

Israel likely to apply sovereignty in Judea and Samaria during summer months, officials say, with a deadline sometime in September.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu will likely work to implement his sovereignty plan during the summer months, spanning July, August, and September, according to a report by Israel Hayom.

According to the Israel Hayom report published Wednesday morning which cited unnamed Israeli officials, the Israeli government will not likely continue implementation of Netanyahu’s sovereignty plan after the summer, with the goal of applying Israeli law over roughly 30% of Judea and Samaria by sometime in September.

Netanyahu to initially “annex” 3 settlement blocs, not Jordan Valley — officials

T. Belman. What a comedown. Just three settlements and no mention of E-1 associated with Maaleh Adumin. It would appear that such a move is not seen as endorsing the Trump Plan.  And why not apply Israel law to all the settlements without reference to the Trump Plan? Why is everyone so timid now? Why do we care what Jordan has to say?  Jordan will never cancel the Peace Treaty with Israel. In fact the US has told the King in no uncertain terms not to terminate the agreement or else.

Why is Jordan brought to the table? They reliquished all their claims to this land. What is going on here?

Why is TOI using the word annexation to describe what is to take place?

Ariel, Ma’ale Adumim and Etzion blocs don’t require much mapping, and Jerusalem thinks drawing out process may help curb friction with Jordan

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will initially announce the annexation of three West Bank blocs, but not the Jordan Valley or other settlement areas, top Israeli officials have said.

Netanyahu had vowed to stick to a July 1 date for declaring annexation over all of Israel’s West Bank settlements and the Jordan Valley, but has recently seemed to temper expectations and indicate that only some areas would be annexed starting on that date. US and Israeli officials have indicated that much legwork remains to be done in preparing for annexation, including by the military and the joint mapping committee tasked with delineating the contours of the annexation move.

According to the Israeli officials, Netanyahu will delay most annexation and only focus on the blocs of Ma’ale Adumim, Ariel and Gush Etzion, home to large settler populations.

High Court nixes Settlements Law as annexation approaches

The law would have retroactively legalized over 4,000 unauthorized settler units in the West Bank.

The High Court of Justice on Tuesday night struck down the 2017 Settlements Law as unconstitutional as the country nears a major decision about annexation in the West Bank.

The law, which in a rare situation, was opposed by Attorney-General Avichai Mandelblit, would have retroactively legalized over 4,000 unauthorized settler units in the West Bank.

Allowing the law to stand would have been a sea change, which critics had called creeping annexation – though many unauthorized outposts would still not be legalized and there would not have been formal annexation.

Black Lives Matter is bad news for the Jews

Of all the world’s nations, BLM chooses to demonize the Jewish State. The blinking, red, warning signal glows brighter every day.

Black Lives matter (BLM) has taken over center stage in this unfolding horror story of the killing of George Floyd. It now has to be considered the nation’s most prominent and powerful organized black group.

And that’s bad luck for us Jews, liberal and conservative, both religious-wise and political-wise. Sadly, most Jewish organizations, those fueled by Jewish donors, stubbornly, willfully ignore the hate from those blacks. They have jumped on the “systemic racism”and “intersectionality” bubkis-bandwagon and are playing “follow the leader”, with BLM calling out the marching cadence.

I cannot emphasize enough the dangers we face in our own community from the new crop of black militants led by BLM. We know the old ones well. Their charter and platform states that Israel is responsible for, “the genocide taking place against the Palestinian people. Israel is an apartheid state..that sanctions discrimination and practices genocide against the Palestinian people.”

‘Only Israel can decide to delay sovereignty bid,’ top US official says

Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat anti-Semitism Elan Carr says that decisions about when and how to apply sovereignty are solely in the hands of Israeli leaders.

By  i24NEWS and ILH Staff   06-09-2020 12:05

A top official in US President Donald Trump’s administration said Monday that the US will not hold back Israel’s plan to announce sovereignty in the Jordan Valley and settlements in Judea and Samaria, as it was a decision to be made “[only] by Israeli leaders.”

Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism Elan Carr made the comment at a conference for Diaspora Jewry hosted by the weekly Makor Rishon newspaper.

“One thing may delay applying sovereignty, and that is a decision by Israel’s leaders,” Carr told Makor Rishon.

“We made it clear, [that] when to annex, how to do it, and how much, is a decision of the prime minister and his partner [Defense Minister] Benny Gantz. They need to make a decision, we said we’re willing to recognize the State of Israel’s sovereignty in those territories,” he added.

Report: Defense minister Gantz to visit Jordan

Jordanian newspaper quotes western diplomats in Amman who are reportedly saying that Benny Gantz thinks he can assuage King Abdullah’s concerns ahead of Israel’s plans to extend sovereignty to the Jordan Valley and large parts of Judea and Samaria.

Defense Minister and prime minister-designate Benny Gantz might soon be paying a special visit to Jordan, the Jordanian newspaper Al-Rai reported this week, quoting western diplomats in Amman.

According to the report, the diplomatic sources leaked that Gantz’s first action in the new government could be a visit to King Abdullah II. The goal of the visit would reportedly be to ease the king’s concerns about the planned declaration of sovereignty Israel plans to make on July 1, with US backing.

The report said that Gantz thinks he can improve the tense relations between Abdullah and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. It also said that Jordan had limited options with which to counter an Israeli declaration of sovereignty, which is why Amman has resorted to threatening to revoke its peace treaty with Israel if Jerusalem proceeds with the unilateral move.

The report also said that Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi has described the move to apply Israeli law in the Jordan Valley and the settlements in Judea and Samaria as a “true disaster” that could cause the peace treaty between Israel and Jordan to collapse.

Jordan fears a Palestinian state

T. Belman. The author writes “Applying it to all settlements indeed endangers not only Israel, but also Jordan. In the Valley the situation is fundamentally different.” In this, he is wrong.  Support for compensated emigration has never been stronger. The fall of the King to Palestinians could be just around the corner.

Whoever thinks that Palestinians will suffice with a quiet life in a small and backward state between Jenin and Jericho are either complete ignoramuses or pathologically addicted to self-deception.

When discussing the application of sovereignty, we should examine the range of considerations regarding the Israel-Jordan-Palestinian triangle, and remember that the Palestinian national movement is the most dangerous enemy of the Hashemite regime.

The Palestinians are eyeing not only Jaffa and Haifa, but also Amman. If an independent Palestinian state is indeed founded in the West Bank, it will first channel its subversion efforts towards Jordan, whose majority of residents are Palestinian. If and when it succeeds in overthrowing the Hashemite regime and linking up to radical Arab and Iranian elements in the region, it will be easier for the Palestinians to fight Israel more effectively.

Whoever thinks that Palestinians will suffice with a quiet life in a small and backward state between Jenin and Jericho are either complete ignoramuses or pathologically addicted to self-deception. They are ignorant of one hundred years of Palestinian political culture.

Tucker: Black Lives Matter is now a political party

T. Belman. I asked my friend Google how much money has been donated to BLM and I was told;

Funding. Black Lives Matter have received over $100 million in funding from the Open Society Foundations, Ford Foundation and Borealis Philanthropy among others.

Also in one of the videos I posted, the narrator said that the sum was over $175 million before he stopped counting.

Gantz backs Jordan Valley annexation if supported by US, Arab states

T. Belman.  This agreement signifies progress. The US and the Arab states are on board but they may appear to be against it. Certainly it doesn’t mean all Arab States. Also Germany has indicated it won’t apply sanctions. Bibi has also said that he will apply sovereignty to the settlements in a separate act. It is doubtful that Gantz will try to stop him seeing as how it involves only 3% of the land..

Amid burgeoning international criticism of move, Blue and White’s Izhar Shai says centrist party has reached agreement with Likud

A Blue and White minister on Tuesday said the centrist party has reached an agreement with Likud on annexing the Jordan Valley, but that party chair Defense Minister Benny Gantz would only support the plan if it was backed by the United States and some Arab countries.

“There is agreement on the Jordan Valley,” said Science and Technology Minister Izhar Shai in an interview with Army Radio.

“But,” he noted, “Gantz has said it would only be done in coordination with the Arab states and with the US.” Shai did not specify which Arab states would be consulted, but Israel is likely to be most concerned about the diplomatic annexation fallout among its neighbors, Jordan and Egypt, with which it has peace treaties.

The Day the NYT Redefined ‘Liberal’ as ‘Closed-minded Outrage Mob’

When Senator Tom Cotton is branded more uniquely offensive than Putin, Erdogan, Ahmedinejad, Maduro or the Taliban, the NYT’s pro-Israel Jewish conservatives are on borrowed time.

By Jonathan S. Tobin

The tragic murder of George Floyd, an African-American man by a Minneapolis policeman, set off protests throughout the United States and eventually the world about the persistence of systemic racism and police misconduct.

But among the sidebars that emanated from the incident was a cautionary tale about the futility of the search for an alternative to the toxic left-right partisanship that is tearing America apart. What happened at The New York Times in the last week after it published an op-ed by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), demonstrates that the notion that even the most powerful brand in journalism can maintain a forum where both left and right can comfortably co-exist is an illusion.

The pushback at what is now derisively termed #bothsidesism has made some conservative Jewish writers and editors at the newspaper a target of social media rage from the left. Cotton’s controversial article has already cost their editor his job and led to an avalanche of often anti-Semitic abuse at another.

No, Israel isn’t a country of privileged and powerful white Europeans

Along with resurgent identity politics in the United States and Europe, there is a growing inclination to frame the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in terms of race. According to this narrative, Israel was established as a refuge for oppressed white European Jews who in turn became oppressors of people of color, the Palestinians.

As an Israeli, and the son of an Iraqi Jewish mother and North African Jewish father, it’s gut-wrenching to witness this shift.

I am Mizrahi, as are the majority of Jews in Israel today. We are of Middle Eastern and North African descent. Only about 30% of Israeli Jews are Ashkenazi, or the descendants of European Jews. I am baffled as to why mainstream media and politicians around the world ignore or misrepresent these facts and the Mizrahi story. Perhaps it’s because our history shatters a stereotype about the identity of my country and my people.

US wants Gantz and Ashkenazi on board with any unilateral annexation move — TV

Knowing how divisive PM’s plan will be in the region, and preoccupied with anti-racist protests and COVID-19 at home, Trump team said requiring at least Israel’s leaders be united

The Trump administration is disinclined to back Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s repeatedly declared intention to unilaterally annex parts of the West Bank next month, unless the move is supported by Netanyahu’s Blue and White coalition partners Defense Minister Benny Gantz and Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi, a TV report claimed Monday night.

Channel 12 news said Netanyahu, Gantz, Ashkenazi and the Likud’s Knesset speaker Yariv Levin met on Sunday night with the US Ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, and that the takeaway from the talks was that for the Americans to give their backing, they would want to see the full Israeli unity government clearly supporting any unilateral annexation move.

INTO THE FRAY: The Iranian presence in Syria and the George Floyd factor

By MARITN SHERMAN

Will a tragic incident on a Minneapolis curbside determine the fate of the political order in Tehran—and its military deployment across the ravaged realms of Syria?

Recent media reports of a series of air attacks on Iranian-related targets in Syria—widely attributed to Israel—have once again raised the question of whether such attacks will eventually convince Tehran to curtail its efforts to set up a permanent military presence in Syria and withdraw its forces, currently deployed in the country.

Conflicting strategic aims

One the one hand, Israel has declared its unflinching resolve to prevent Iran from establishing such a presence on its northern neighbor’s territory—and has backed up its words with impressive deeds, inflicting considerable damage on both Iranian forces and installations, as well as on their Syrian hosts.
