It’s no secret that the Israeli economy benefits from the Palestinian Arab workforce, especially in the real estate domain. Broad consensus supports this arrangement, with only a few extreme parties on either side opposing it.

Tens of thousands of Palestinian Arab workers cross what I call the “Israel-Israel” border every day to earn a living or visit their lucky relatives in Israeli Arab villages. This reality often invites security problems. However, the Israeli leadership is adept at lowering the level of concern to swiftly return to the routine of these workers.

Netanyahu reportedly informs coalition heads Levin-Rothman legislation to restructure Judicial Selection Committee won’t be enacted, other parts of package will be advanced instead

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly told ministers over the weekend that the coalition’s current legislation aimed at securing control over the Judicial Selection Committee, which was suspended in late March just prior to being enacted, will not be revived.

The legislation — which would give the coalition near-complete control over the appointment of all Israel’s judges — is one of the central planks of the judicial overhaul, crafted by the package’s architects Justice Minister Yariv Levin and Constitution Law and Justice Committee chairman Simcha Rothman.

This paper surveys the trends in trade between Israel and China, in both goods and services, over the past decade (2013–2022). Especially noticeable is the significant and consistent rise in trade with Israel during those years, based mostly on the import of goods from China, which totaled $17.62 billion in 2022. The imports from China are diverse and include machinery for infrastructure and construction projects, consumer products ordered from Chinese websites, which to some degree has mitigated the rise in the cost of living in Israel, and for the past two years, the import of cars from China.

T. Belman. The government is quite right to propose this extension to the Minister of National Security. This differs from the detention  applied to the Jan 6 detainees  in that they were subject to trumped up charges whereas in Israel the detentions would be soundly based.

Israel’s Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara is expected to oppose the bill aimed at giving National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir authority to approve administrative detention orders.

The Justice Ministry has yet to formulate a final position on the bill, which is due to be on Sunday’s agenda of the Ministerial Committee for Legislation. According to Justice Ministry sources, however, expanding the use of administrative detention, as Ben-Gvir is seeking, is unnecessary and could infringe upon human rights.

The Israeli cabinet is set to approve a resolution on Sunday that would shorten the process of approving construction in West Bank Jewish settlements and give Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich – who also serves as a minister in the Defense Ministry – the authority to approve one of the stages. The decision would change a system that has been in effect for the last 27 years.

In a related development, next week the Supreme Planning Council of the Israeli Civil Administration in the West Bank will consider the advancement of plans for thousands of housing units in West Bank settlements.

UTJ MK says haredi party still seeks to pass law allowing Knesset to re-enact legislation struck down by the Supreme Court.

While the Likud party is currently focused on passing smaller parts of the government’s planned judicial reforms in response to the opposition’s decision to suspend the negotiations at the President’s Residence, the haredi United Torah Judaism (UTJ) party is demanding the passage of one of the most controversial parts of the reforms, the override clause.

Kan Reshet Bet reported that Knesset Finance Committee chairman MK Moshe Gafni (UTJ) said in closed conversations last week that he is seeking the passage of the override clause.

“We will not give up on the override clause,” Gafni said in the midst of the crisis between the coalition and the opposition.

Finance Minister Smotrich says Judea and Samaria residents no longer being treated as second-class citizens with new construction.

The agenda for the Supreme Planning Council for Judea and Samaria was published today (Sunday). The agenda includes the approval of over 4,500 housing units in various communities in Judea and Samaria.

The published plans join the nearly ten thousand units published at the previous meeting of the Supreme Planning Council. With the new plans, more housing units have been approved in the first six months of 2023 than at any other six-month period of the last decade.
