Peloni:  This is an important video.  Dr. David Wurmser and Prof. Fransisco Gil-White tackle the question of what is motivating Trump’s preference to pursue a deal with Iran rather than deal with the Iranian regime as if it were the fanatical Armageddonist regime which it is.  The answer to this question will inform us as to what Trump’s real goal might be in Iran, and how dark the future appears, both for the region and the world.

Peloni: Is Saudi Arabia earnestly allying itself with Turkey against Israel?  Recall that Turkey and SA are nations with diametrically opposed ideologies and are in fact regional rivals of one another.  While Turkey seeks to recreate the Ottoman Empire, which would include the conquest of Saudi Arabi, Saudi Arabia seeks to maintain its own national order.  This raises the question as to why MBS would support such a project as the revival of the Hejaz Railway, which would not only undermine Israel’s role in the region, but the independence of Saudi Arabia as well.  Is MBS so motivated to sideline Israeli regional prominence to bolster the threat against his own regime?  I don’t think so.

An agreement signed on June 10 by Turkey and Saudi Arabia aims at reviving the historic Hejaz Railway, establishing a new trade corridor linking the Gulf to Europe through Turkey, Syria, and Jordan. Yet the project’s realization is hardly imminent. Financial and security obstacles could still prevent the railway from ever materializing.

It’s encouraging that the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is persisting with legal efforts to deport Mohsen Mahdawi, who was arrested for undermining US foreign policy and government counter-antisemitism efforts with his pro-Hamas campus activism. Peloni:  Many of the questions in the press conference reflected the opening of the political season for the coming election, but note too that the Bibi’s answers were frank and qualifying.  Most notably, Bibi makes it very clear that he is still unaware of the terms of the presumably now signed document.   He also references and respects the relationship with the US, and is careful to explain the nature of relationship is one that requires careful handling.  While making the election pitch that the manner in which he handled this relationship is reflected in the achievements which have taken place over this past term, it must be noted that Bibi stood up to Biden when he, along with the support of  others including Eisenkot and Gantz, when he took the bold step of seizing Rafah.  So too it must be reflected upon that the IDF today remains in Lebanon in a forward position and in full possession of Beaufort Castle and beyond the Litani.  A question remains in my mind if it is believable that Bibi could reasonably withstand the pressure from Trump in demanding he evacuate Lebanon, and yet, there the IDF remains.  Much will be determined if this buffer zone is abandoned once again as has happened in the past under US pressure.  Should the IDF maintain or expand this position in Lebanon, it is a credible question of whether this is being accomplished with Trump’s support or despite it.  Stated otherwise, is it reasonable that Bibi could openly defy Trump on this point, even as he could not do so at the end of the 12 Day War when Trump demanded and end to the war?

Peloni: It is interesting that Vance complains that Israel is reacting to reports on the news when it is Vance and the US administration which has kept the terms of the deal secret.  Also, while claiming that the US has all the cards, Vance fails to explain why he is offering Iran an even sweeter deal with front loading the lifting of the embargo.  The desperation being exhibited by Trump and Vance to advance this deal to negotiate a deal, at this specific time, is very clear, even as the unstated reason has yet to be revealed.

Peloni: This video provides an important backdrop for the candidacy of Gadi Eisenkot.  From the tragedy surrounding the death of his sin and two nephews to his role in the IDF to his role on the Israeli War Cabinet to his challenge against Bennett to lead the anti-Bibi opposition.

I think more time should have been spent on teasing apart Eisenkot’s actions while he was on the War Cabinet. This should be his greatest selling point, but in fact I think it is actually his greatest liability.  His stern opposition to the Rafah campaign, in support of the US order of “Don’t” will be a difficult reality for him to overcome. Also I am surprised that there was no mention in this video about Eisenkot’s ambitious Aliyah reform plan.

Hmm. What’s wrong with this picture? Trump keeps saying, and Vance dutifully echoes him, that a deal is “close” that will ensure that Iran surrenders all of its stockpile — some 140 kg. — of uranium that had been enriched to a just-below-weapons-grade of 60%. But surely, then, Iran shouldn’t be making it harder — perhaps impossibly harder — for that uranium to be retrievable.
