Peloni: In an interview on Channel 14, journalist and researcher Dr. Edy Cohen argued that Erdogan’s increasing anti Israel rhetoric is in response to fact in response to Israel’s growing position in the region. Turkey and Israel are the only two nations in the region capable of force projection of their armed forces beyond their borders, and they are both important US allies, making the competition between these nations both material and significant. More than this, as Mike Doran of the Hudson Institute has often noted, it remains critical for Trump to manage the relationship between these nations with care. Unfortunately for everyone, Trump has managed this relationship using Amb. Tom Barrack, providing Turkey with a sense of support and promotion in the region. Yet, if we consider the comments of Cohen on this issue, it calls to mind something I wrote earlier today, namely that Erdogan seems to be projecting an image of strength because he is increasingly coming aware of how weak he actually is in the shadow of Israel’s dominance in the region. Notably, the only real strength Erdogan has demonstrated is the seizure of Syria by his proxy forces under Jolani. Yet, even in this, we must recall that Erdogan’s success was only manageable because Israel hollowed out the Iranian proxy Hezbollah with its Grim Beeper operation. So, while Trump is promoting and supporting Turkey’s interests in the region, is he actually attempting to calm Erdogan’s failing esteem as he becomes ever more aware that Turkey is losing its ability to dominate the future of the region, something which Erdogan has long made it his goal to do?

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday that Israel’s actions in Syria and Lebanon have gone too far and also threaten Turkey.
“The attacks by [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu and his network of murder on Lebanon and Syria have brought the issue to a point where it also threatens Turkey,” Erdogan said in a speech to lawmakers from his ruling AK Party.

Peloni: After initially stating that an agreement with Iran was nearly complete, Donald Trump revised his timeline, indicating that finalizing the deal will likely require a few more days. Speaking from the Oval Office, the President described the arrangement as a “great settlement” pending document finalization, with a potential signing ceremony occurring in Europe as early as this weekend. While Trump confirmed he would not attend the event, he noted that Vice President JD Vance along with negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would represent the United States.
Despite the President’s optimism regarding the near-final status of the documents, both Israeli and Iranian officials have indicated to the media that the agreement is not yet fully concluded. Trump maintains that the deal will guarantee Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon and will result in the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a objective that was not an initial aim of the conflict. Currently, a memorandum of understanding is pending to extend the existing ceasefire and establish a framework for future negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.

President Trump warned Thursday that the US will soon take over Kharg Island, which processes about 90% of Iran’s crude oil for export, following a second day of airstrikes against the Islamic Republic.
Peloni: This is an important report. The single factor which keeps the Iranian regime in place is the lack of an armed/trained ground force in the region, ie boots on the ground to support the gains of the US-Israeli air campaign. It is interesting that while reports of the Kurds fulfilling this role have been quashed by Washington against its own interests, the Iranians continue to target and bombard the Kurds with impunity and nearly a thousand attacks on the Kurds have taken place over the past three and a half months. So, in accordance with what Yossi Baum’s sources are telling him, might Iran know something is possibly afoot in Erbil which will ultimately threaten the survival of the IRGC’s control over Iran? To be certain, the foretold outcome here makes a great deal more sense as per American interests and it would reshape the region in a profoundly significant way in America’s favor, but in Israel’s favor as well. Iran, trying to force the IDF to stop hitting Hezbollah sites in Beirut, launched 11 ballistic missiles at Israel on June 7. They were all intercepted, causing no damage. But such an attack could not go unanswered. The IDF then responded, giving not as good as it got, but far better.
Peloni: This is an important test for both the regime and the people. As the regime has taken on a more aggressive and bold posture with its international opposition, the question remains if they will similarly respond to the renewed demonstration by its internal opposition. Likewise, it remains to be seen how robust the public demonstration against the regime might come to be. Right now it is a limited demonstration, which allows the regime the ability to steady their hand at the moment. If the protests increase, particularly as the Americans are resuming their attacks, the Iranian regime will have an important question before it as to whether to let this internal threat grow or to enforce their dominance over the public. If the latter tactic is chosen, it will provide Trump with a second chance to fulfill his commitment to the Iranian people and come to their aid, something which I suspect he will not easily fail to fulfill a second time. So while these protests are still limited at the moment, they bear watching.

Peloni: It is interesting that as the West is crippled with a judiciary which weaponizes legal codes and norms to support the establishment, even to the point of eliminating opposition candidates with ease, the same standard of corruption and social failing is not being adopted inside Erdogan’s Turkey. On May 21, 2026, the 36th Civil Chamber of the Ankara Regional Court of Appeals ruled that the 38th Ordinary Congress, held November 4-5, 2023, and 21st Extraordinary Congress, held September 21, 2025, of Turkey’s leading opposition party, the Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (CHP), were “absolutely null and void” due to corruption, it said, in the proceedings.[1] This ruling created a legislative and judicial crisis in the CHP that is ongoing.

Similar referals should have begun a year ago at the latest, begging the question why the matters which are facing the expiration of statue of limitations are not being pressed forward as we speak. Peloni: Something just changed. Trump has thus far balanced all threats of destruction with a reference to the deal being close, imminent and maturing. I am wondering if an American soldier might have been killed in Iran’s subsequent attacks on the US. Whatever caused this change, it is a much more determined and uncompromising tone to what Trump has been employing over the past two months. G_d willing, this is not another negotiating posture.
