How Qatar buys powerful friends in Washington

The case of Bob Menendez and others like him

Natalie Ecanow | August 6, 2024

What do gold bars, luxury watches and Formula One racing tickets have in common? They’re all part of the reported corruption scheme that brought down Bob Menendez, the once-influential Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman.

Menendez stepped down from his powerful post days after a jury found him guilty of accepting bribes and using his influence to secure a multimillion-dollar Qatari investment deal. Menendez still denies any wrongdoing. The Justice Department brought no charges against Qatari individuals, but Doha was involved. And that marks another example of the mega-wealthy and corrupt petrostate buying influence in Washington and around the world.

To Defeat the Houthis, Starve Their Military Resupply

The Biden administration is playing defense. The Iranian government is open about its so-called “Axis of Resistance,” a patchwork of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-sponsored proxy groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and various Iraqi militias, all of which work under loose Iranian direction to advance the Islamic Republic’s goals of exporting revolution, eradicating Israel, and overthrowing moderate Arab states.

Is it 1968 all over again?

Peloni:  Tierney penned a very intriguing analysis here.  Well researched and well argued.

Tierney’s Real News | August 7, 2024

Is 2024 a repeat of 1968? Sure looks like it to me. Let’s examine the parallels.

Seymour Hersh is a reporter who was recruited in late 1967 to handle the press and write speeches for Democrat Senator Eugene McCarthy of Minnesota. McCarthy sought the Democratic presidential nomination in the 1968 election, challenging incumbent Lyndon B. Johnson on an anti-Vietnam War platform. McCarthy unsuccessfully ran for U.S. president four more times.

Is Iran Getting Cold Feet?

Peloni:  This would be quite a turnabout by Iran, and too much of a testimony of Iran’s weakness in the face of Israel’s strengths.  Recalling that disinformation is an important element of war, we will see what comes next, but I think this report will not age well.

Kamala Picks Walz as a Manchurian Candidate

Peloni:  So the Dem Party Bosses have made their choices.  Now it only remains to be seen if the American people will acquiece in accepting this choice.

Tim Walz’s troubling China ties exposed.

Daniel Greenfield | August 7, 2024

With the United States and China engaged in a heated trade war, the US-China Peoples Friendship Association (USCPFA) scheduled its national convention in Minneapolis.

Minnesota’s soybean trade made it China’s best leverage against President Trump’s tariffs and the regime was fortunate to have one of its own in the governor’s residency.

It’s A Dark Day For American Jews

Peloni:  I would argue that there is an alternative reason that Shapiro was not chosen to balance the Radical Left ticket, namely, that the Left recognize that US elections are no longer a measure of the will of the people, but are instead based upon the selections made by the powerful.

Case Strengthens for a Second Shooter in Butler, PA

Stephen Bryen | Weapons and Strategy | August 6, 2024

Trump reaches for his ear when hit

It is increasingly unlikely that there will be an honest investigation of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania.  So far, no one has been fired or disciplined in any way.  Infighting between the Secret Service and the Butler police continues.

Abortion, Pro-life, Pro-choice

It is time to resolve the abortion debate

By Walter E. Block | August 7, 2024

It is time, no, it is long past time, to resolve the abortion debate, once and for all. Neither the pro-life nor the pro-choice position can withstand serious analysis. Both must be rejected. In favor of what? Evictionism; on this see below. First, let us heavily criticize the two major contenders in this debate.

According to the pro-life position, human life begins at the two cell fetus stage. The sperm alone with not eventuate into an adult member of our species, nor will the egg all on its own; united, together, in the right (womb) environment, the two of them, together, will. In the pro-life position, this tiny Homo-sapien has rights equal to every other member of this species. Among them is the right not to be murdered.

Inducing antisemitic evil in the soul

The misuse of language induces antisemitism, to paraphrase Socrates.

illustration ?????: PEXELS

The philosopher Socrates once wrote that “the misuse of language induces evil in the soul” and this maxim pretty much sums up the sanctification of Hamas and vilification of Israel since October 7th. There should be no question about the atrocities perpetrated by Hamas or its goal of exterminating Jews globally. And yet, progressive voices the world over misuse language to describe the rape of Jewish women and girls, murder of Jewish civilians, decapitation of Jewish babies, and taking of Jewish hostages as “acts of resistance.”

Is Trump Really Ahead with Jews in New York?

Peloni:  The relatively small sample size (n=100) is important to note, but in a nation where the elections are openly stolen, I would openly question the relevant value of the best polling data available in any event.  This being said, we are all likely aware of several Leftist Jews, people we would likely hesitate to discuss anything political, many of whom have taken a change of opinion over the past many months.  While none of them may be lining up to buy their first MAGA hat, I have to admit that I know many who are clearly no longer comfortable in their old Dem party suits, so to speak.  I find this very encouraging, while acknowledging that it is simply anectodical evidence.

World War III Coming Soon, U.S. Military Woefully Unprepared

by Gordon G. Chang  •  Gatestone Institute • August 6, 2024

It is incomprehensible that the U.S. after the Cold War would allow militant regimes to develop stronger fighting forces than its own, but that is exactly what happened. Global conflict on the horizon, and the leaders of America’s enemies are not squeamish. China’s President Xi Jinping relishes making war references at every opportunity. “Dare to fight!” is one of his favorite lines. (Image source: iStock/Getty Images)

  • “The Commission finds that DoD’s business practices, byzantine research and development and procurement systems, reliance on decades-old military hardware, and culture of risk avoidance reflect an era of uncontested military dominance… Such methods are not suited to today’s strategic environment…. The U.S. public are largely unaware of the dangers the United States faces or the costs (financial and otherwise) required to adequately prepare,” — Commission on the National Defense Strategy, July 29, 2024.

What will Iran do next?

Following the killings of Hezbollah’s Fuad Shukr and Hamas’s Ismail Haniyeh, Israel and the Middle East are poised and waiting for the next move. The two killings represent a significant humiliation for the Iran-led regional axis, which until this point had been projecting a sense of achievement and satisfaction.

Lesson from a unique Israeli airstrike

Concern about civilian casualties never stopped the American air force from bombing Nazis in World War II, or Al Qaeda in Afghanistan, or ISIS in Syria and Iraq.

Moshe Phillips | Aug 5, 2024

Israel last week carried out a rare airstrike on Arab terrorists in a Palestinian Authority city. It was logical and effective. But it was also a prime example of the kind of anti-terrorist action the Israelis will never be able to undertake if a Palestinian Arab state is created.

In the past, Israel typically has sent ground troops into PA cities in pursuit of terrorists. But again and again, mobs of Palestinian Arab civilians have interfered by hurling rocks and firebombs at the soldiers as they try to advance.

Iran In the Caucasus, Should Israel Worry?

By Martin Sherman | August 5, 2024

In recent weeks, persistent and perturbing reports have appeared in several prominent media outlets — with potentially ominous overtones for Israel — of a sizeable weapons deal brewing between Armenia and Iran.

Although there have been spluttering peace negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, raising hope of some resolution to the decades-long conflict between the two Caucasian nations, tensions still exist.
