Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak says the current protests against the government’s judicial reform plan will end with loss of life.

“We are heading into civil non-violent disobedience. It’s an extremely inspiring movement, and it will not stop. We will block this attempt on the life of Israel’s democracy, and we will win this battle, there may be ups and downs, it might take time, some people might lose their lives along the way. I told the people we would have to face toil, sweat, and tears, hopefully, no blood, but there might be some violence, always coming from the right wing, but we will put an end to it, whatever the price will be,” Barak told CBS News.

She paints in very vivid colors the reality of a minority that has wielded enormous power over the citizenry of the State of Israel via the Supreme Court. The Court of Israel has not served as “the breaks” that reign in the Legislative Branch as much as it has been a self-appointed supreme authority without any counterbalance to their power. T. Belman. This author misconstrues the purpose of the Abraham Accords. It was to normalize relations between Israel and each of the Arab countries who signed them.  It is irrelevant how it was “touted”. She asks “Have these accords achieved peace and stability between signatory countries? Have they isolated regional threats and minimized Iranian, Russian, or Chinese intervention? Have they facilitated any significant progress on Israeli-Palestinian negotiations?” It was never intended to.

She complains “In the authoritarian context of Arab states, any normalization of ties with Israel entails repression, as regimes begin to proactively crack down on those who would oppose this development.”

From my perspective the AA delivered little. Israel should make no concessions on Area C or the Temple Mount to expand them.

T. Belman.  I often wonder how could anyone have been so stupid as to believe this was good for Israel or that the leopard, Arafat, has changed  its spots. Much of the blame has to be put on the US shoulders as they applied enormous pressure to achieve this agreement. Surely it did not have Israel’s best interests at heart.  And it still doesn’t have our best interests at heart.

Remember this as we head into negotiations for normalization. Arab promises are worthless. Normalization means nothing and can always be reversed. If the Saudis want to normalize with us, they can just do it. They don’t need anything from us including an agreement.

The Biden Administration was out in force on Monday to celebrate the return home of seven American citizens from Iran, five of whom had been in prison. We can all be grateful for their freedom, but the question we wish U.S. policy markers would do more to address is how they will prevent the next hostage-taking by a rogue regime.

T. Belman. I disagree with Natalie Morris. I think the US should continue doing what it is doing in Syria. Its position is strategically very important in preventing Iran, Syria and Russia from solidifying their control of all Syria. Officially their troop deployment is under 1000 US troops. In fact I wonder why the US hasn’t taken over all Syria now that Russia is preoccupied with Ukraine.
