Israel to boost Air Force power with new F-35 squadron
In mid-December 2022, an F-35 aircraft crashed in the US, leading both America and Israel to ground a significant portion of their F-35 fleets.
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Sunday submitted an official Letter of Request (LOR) to the US and to Lockheed Martin for the purchase of a third squadron of 25 F-35 aircraft, which will eventually bring Israel’s total complement to 75 aircraft.
The LOR was submitted to the US’s Joint Program Office (JPO) after an announcement on July 2 that Israel had internally approved seeking the additional 25 F-35 aircraft and would now start working on eventually submitting an LOR, culminating in Sunday’s announcement.

A-G tells court to strike down Basic Law on Reasonableness Standard
T. Belman. No one disputes the need for checks and balances, separation of powers, rule of law. The issue at hand is that until such time as Israel approves a constitution, the High Court has no right to insert its policies and values. Neither can it legislate from the bench. Legislating is the prerogative of the Knesset.

Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara called on the Supreme Court to strike down the Basic Law amendment which reduces the court’s ability to apply the Reasonableness Standard against the government.
Baharav-Miara today (Sunday) submitted her position on the petitions against the law, in preparation for the hearing on the matter before a full panel of all 15 Supreme Court justices next Tuesday.

It is undeniable that the judiciary and juries in the federal courts in the District of Columbia are almost uniformly left-wing partisans, a key part of the post-constitutional era brought into being by former president Obama. I do not know how or whether this can be rectified, although I expect a resounding victory for Republicans in 2024 followed by a congressional reshaping of the jurisdiction of these courts and their staffing may be the only solution.

Large-scale protests against the regime of President Bashar Assad have entered their second week in southern Syria. The protests originated in – and are focused on – the majority Druze province of Sweida. However, other parts of the country have also witnessed protests and strikes.
Among these areas is Deraa province, which adjoins Sweida, and where the original demonstrations that sparked the Syrian civil war took place in early 2011. Rallies have also taken place in Jarama, areas of Idlib Province, neighborhoods of eastern Aleppo, and in the coastal Latakia Province, host to a large Alawi population – and often considered the heartland and cradle of Assad’s rule.

I just began reading Blacklisted by History; The Untold Story of Joe McCarthy. It seeks to establish that many of the people that McCarthy targeted unsuccessfully were later proven to be communists. It brought back many memories for me.
I grew up in the forties and fifties. My father’s family, like many other Polish Jewish families in Canada, were avowed Communists. They were dedicated to Jewish rights, workers’ rights and marched in the streets to advance their causes. They even managed to get one of their own, J P Salsberg, elected to the Ontario legislature representing the Communist Party, then called the Labour-Progressive Party.

Unrest in Syria’s southern Druze city of As-Suwayda: Implications for change and regional dynamics
T. Belman. I posted the map so that you could see the proximity of the Druze City of As Suwayda to Jordan. As this city gains its independence, it will protect the northern Jordanian border. The same for Nawa to the north of it.
The second article at the bottom mentions Daara as part of the uprising. Perhaps the uprising will go further north to Quinetra thereby protecting Israel’s border. I believe this area is populated by the Druze who are friendly to Israel.
The Jordan Option may be waiting on this development.
